USEFUL INFORMATION

1. Portuguese Nationality. Many Indian Passport holders appear to be unaware that:
a. anyone born in Goa prior to 1962 and/or
b. those with a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who was born in Goa prior to 1962 are eligible to apply for Portuguese nationality. Portugal allows their nationals to hold dual nationality though the India currently does not.

2. The Civil Service Careers fair for Ethnic Communities was held at Westminster Central Hall on 5 July. British or EC nationals who are graduates have been invited to apply for senior positions in the quota
reserved for the ethnic communities. Applicants have to be graduates and qualifications gained overseas are recognised. Aires Rodrigues, 0181-520 4295, aires@mcmail.com has agreed to provide further information.

Sangolda-Guirim: COSMO FLORENCIO D'SOUZA (Ex-Uganda), husband of Julie, father of Celly/Zelie, Brian/Jasmine (Dubai), Carmel, Carl/Jocylyn and Anthony, expired on July 1.

Mapusa: LENNY PINTO (Manager-Sita World Travel, Goa), husband of Xavita, father of Lovell, Warren, Dr Gretchen and Calen, expired on July 4.

1. The Goa Assembly session started on 7 July. Some of the measures announced:
a. The tourism policy aims at shifting the emphasis from `quantity' tourism to `quality' tourism to attract `high value' tourists to the state.
b. The virtual ban on creating any new posts in the public sector
c. The reduction of retirement age to 58.
d The vigilance department is to weed out corruption in government departments and the anti-corruption bureau in the police department is being re-activated and strengthened

4. From August 1, 1999, the telephone code for accessing all places in Goa from outside India will be 00 91 832. The old code for South Goa (834) will be discontinued after 15 August 1999.
5. Antonio Jorge Jacob de Carvalho, Portuguese Consul General, Bombay, states that Goa could attract large investments from Portuguese investors in infrastructure development, provided the state is promoted abroad as a trade destination.
6. The Reliance-Salgaocar Power Limited's Sancoale plant went operational on 5 July. The naphta-based plant will sell 40 mega watts of electricity to the Goa government, from its total capacity of 48 mega watts.

1. Leander Paes won both the mens and mixed doubles final at Wimbeldon on the same day, Sunday 4 July.

2. The Edgar Fernandes Campaign attracted wide media attention on radio and TV with live coverage of the vigil outside the Maltese High Commission on 7July. Imran Khan, the lawyer in the Stephen Lawrence case has agreed to act in the case and there have been immediate developments. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Condon and Foreign Secretary Robin Cook have separately agreed to meet to discuss the issues of the Campaign.
