A 45-year old British woman was allegedly raped by five unknown persons at Betalbatim on the night of May 11. The victim had been residing in Goa since Feb. and has visited Goa six times in the last 16 years. Officials from the British Embassy have sought information from the Goa Police. One arrest was made on 16 May - Abdul Moonaf Naik, who has been a resident of Betalbatim for seven years. However, the Goa sources on 18 May indicated that she had gone missing.

Pre-monsoon thundershowers accompanied by lightning lashed Goa on 16 May.

Lara Dutta, 21-year-old Indian model, was named Miss Universe 2000 in Cyprus on May 13. India previously won the Miss Universe contest in 1994 and Miss World in 1966, 1994, 1997 and 1999.

In an attempt to reduce the revenue deficit, the Goa government has now permitted its employees to retire from service voluntarily any time after completing 10 years of qualifying service.

Goa University is to make Information Technology a compulsory subject for all undergraduates.

A 19-year-old youth from Arossim was arrested by the Verna Police on charges of having an illicit relationship with a minor girl from his school, and refusing to marry her after she became pregnant. However, he agreed to marry her after being charged. It is not known if charges against him have now been dropped.
