COMMUNITY NEWS

Worldwide Goans is organising an International Convention in Goa on 30 Dec. 2000 at which elections will take place for positions on the Main Committee and the Sub-Committee of regional representatives. There is to be a UK representative and Tony Luis has been nominated for this. Anyone wishing to volunteer or to nominate should write to the returning Officer, Mr Damodar Mauzo at dymauzo@goatelecom.com by 30th October 2000.

A website called www.fatima-messenger.com has been launched by the World Apostolate of Fatima in India.

Worldwide Goans have organised a poster competition to coincide with the second annual international Goan Convention, to held at the Institute Braganza on December 30. The theme of the poster is "Changing face of Goa", size no bigger than 25" x 30", and prizes Rs.10,000, Rs.7500 and Rs.5000. Old Goa is losing its pilgrimage ambience for world tourists due to the growing and often illegal construction of small buildings.

Concerned over the growing menace of plastic littering, an eighty-day clean-up drive was launched in Goa on October 2 to collect millions of plastic bags and bottles thrown in the fields, drains, roads and beaches.

A soldier in civilian clothes was taken to the police station for his involvement in a brawl in a local bar. A posse of his military colleagues attacked the Panjim police station and rescued him and in the process two police constables were injured.

The ban on the Anjuna Flea Market has been lifted following representations made to the Chief Minister of the hardship it would cause to locals. However, a survey on Wed. 4 Oct. revealed that only 20 of the some 400 stallholders were locals.

Colva beach is being guarded by security personnel to ensure that the gypsies do not harass the tourists.

Goa's Archbishop, Dr Raul Gonsalves said that Christianity was not a foreign religion and Indian Christians were as patriotic and loyal to their country as any other Indians.

The PWD Minister, Mr Subhash Shirodkar, has said that the government proposes to construct a bridge to Chorao.
