COMMUNITY NEWS

The World Wide Goans Convention will be held on December 30, 2000 in Goa. Other cultural and sports activities organised by GOA ONLINE ACTION NETWORK, (G.O.A.N.) are being linked to this event. The GOAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL Committee is headed by Tomazinho Cardoso and aided by Damodar Mauzo, Timoteo Fernandes, Prince Jacob, Victor Hugo Gomes, Caetan Abreu and Octavio Rodrigues. The GOAN MILLENNIUM GAMES will bring together Goans from all over the world, They will compete in Table Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Basketball, Billiards, Snooker, Pool and Bridge. Fred Noronha interviews Silicon Valley multi-millionaire Romulus Pereira, probably the world's richest Goan. Still in his early 30s, Romulus with two Indian friends set up a company, YAGO Systems in 1996. It was soon sold for US$285 million. Even if they are unsuccessful in establishing their own high-tech businesses, they will make better managers later in life as they will have a broader experience and better business acumen from having tried their hand at being an entrepreneur…

Goa all but came to a standstill on Tuesday (19 Sept.) following the news that three of Goa's top young musicians, Selwyn Pereira, Victor Alvares and Dharmendra Hirve who were in Remo's band, died in a road accident at Kanpur. Remo's assistant, Sunil Redkar and the driver were killed. Remo Fernandes was in Bombay and is safe.

Indian tennis player Leander Paes was the flag bearer for the Indian contingent at the 26th Olympic Games at Sydney.

The Indian Navy has conceded to the requests from Goa's tourism industry to review the flight timings at the Dabolim airport on Fridays. The first charter flight will land at Dabolim on October 8.

The Corruption Commission has held former Mapusa Municipal Council chief, Subhash Narvekar. brother of Goa's Deputy Chief Minister, guilty of corruption. He was found guilty of favouritism, malpractice and flagrant violation of rules and procedures in the matter of the construction of 60 stalls in Mapusa Market.

The Goa police have been able to round 125 head of cattle within a fortnight of launching their drive to round up stray cattle, and collected nearly Rs.19,000 as fine from 70 cattle owners.

Despite a ban by the High Court, a bullfight was held at St Agostinho-Morod, Santa Cruz, Goa, on 17 th Sept.

The Margao Municipal Council expects the computerisation of birth and death records to be completed by the end of Oct. 2000.

16 Sept. ABIX - Australia. In September the beaches of north Goa are suffering oil pollution following the grounding of "River Princess". The ore carrier, which was to be re-built as a transhipper by Salgaoncar Shipping, drifted in strong winds onto a sand bar. Salgaoncar has promised to plug the leak in the ship and clean up the oil from the beaches.
