COMMUNITY NEWS

From Flavio Gracias: Goan Association (UK) - Annual/Extraordinary General Meetings on 9th September 2001. Business was completed on the day and no adjournment was necessary. The AGM was completed within two hours and the EGM in one and a half hours and the meeting closed at 5.30pm. The general body accepted the recommendation to proceed with the sale of the playing fields at a price not less than £265,000. On the future direction, the recommendation to set up a General Purposes Sub-Committee to progress this consultation process was accepted. Sadly, the following vacancies were not filled at the meeting. Sports Director, Social & Cultural Director, Legal and Admin Director, Assistant Finance Director. The Board will endeavour to co-opt members to these positions in due course.

Tony Fernandes is taking over Air Asia, Malaysia's second national airline. He moved from London to become vice-president, Asean, Warner Music International, and is "set to emulate Richard Branson whose business empire stemmed from the setting up of Virgin Records and which now includes the successful Virgin Airlines," according to The Star, Malaysia. From Ellie Fernandes: The first Goan Elvis Night, 25Aug. was sensational. From Ciren Gracias. Arusha will be hosting the first ever Tanzania Goan Convention (TGC) from 14 to 16 Sept. 2001 at the Arusha Institute. The theme of the convention is "A Step Forward". There are four topics for discussion: 1) What can we do for the elderly of our community, 2) Life in Arusha - then and now (Focus on Goans), 3) Why has the level of Goan socialization declined in recent years? What can we do about it? and 4) How can we promote career-counselling, job opportunities and maintain a database of Tanzanian Goans.
