Extracts from Navhind Times, 27 Sept: Speaking from Goa, Platon Loizou, MD of Jewel in the Crown Holidays (UK) said his company buys 300 seats a week to Goa in normal times. But fear of flying among the tourists has compelled the company "to consider reducing this figure by about 100 seats per week". On Sept. 24 they had 15 new bookings. They also had 20 cancellations. He said said that the UK charter operators are now talking to the airlines asking them to reduce the flights to Goa. One suggestion is to have flights originating from Manchester picking up passengers at Gatwick and then proceeding to Goa. Mr Loizou added "If the beaches are kept clean and if proper toilet facilities are provided there, whatever happens, we will always be here!" *27 Sept. The Gazette (Montreal). When racism strikes. By Cheryl Braganza. Excerpts: In 1978, when my husband, our three very young sons and I moved into the Beacon Hill area of Beaconsfield because we were told it was a quiet, respectable area … the word "paki." was burned into our lawn with a chemical. On the days that followed, anonymous voices on the phone told us: "Get out - don't pollute this neighbourhood. We don't want your kind here." …I tried to pretend I was not Indian. I tried to cook "Canadian" foods…no neighbours came forward to say that they were appalled by what they saw…It has only been a couple of years, through friendships and therapy, that I am finally proud of my Goan heritage…I love Montreal but those people came very close to destroying me… Cheryl Braganza is a Montreal artist, poet and musician.
