*29 Apr. Sunday Times. By Sunil Khilnani: Last weekend I flew
from Goa to London. As I had expected,
many seats were filled
by Goan families returning to Britain from an Easter break.
I could hear their conversations: well-fed mothers wishing they
had been able to stay longer with their families and to enjoy
the mangoes and cashews ripening in gardens full of childhood
memories; their svelte teenaged children, on the other hand, fidgeting
to get back to Britain, to escape the lousy Goan chewing gum and
make it to the garage music night on Saturday.
For these youngsters, born and brought up in Britain, India means
a classy holiday destination to impress their school friends,
not a teary return to their motherland. More and more, parents
who left the Indian subcontinent for Britain are discovering that,
even within their own families, they can no longer assume they
all belong to one community.
The rest of the long (1197 words) and provocative article deals
with the UK Asian communities. Read it if you can. Go to http://www.sunday-times.co.uk/news/pages/sti/2001/04/29/stirevnws01011.html
