The final part of Maria Aurora Couto’s assessment of the life of this great Goan artist appeared in The Hindu 6 April 2002 and can be found at http://www.hinduonnet.com/mag/stories/2002040700120200.htm It is a riveting read of 3805 words. Excerpts: …Souza’s first wife Maria supported him in London, working as a couturier, sought after by prestigious fashion houses. She made great headway for herself and her then unknown husband when Vogue featured, through her intervention, a piece on the artist and a design created by her. Later, she ran October Gallery, which was unique and innovative in what it sought to display …Souza's intellectual and artistic life evolved within an urban ethos which also embraced Europe through an English educational system, and metropolitan culture sustained by interaction with Britain… For the first part of this article see: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goanet/messages/20272

15 April. People Magazine. Dr Richard W. D'Souza wasn't up for an award on Oscar night. But he became one of the evening's big winners after Sandra Bullock stopped for a television interview on the red carpet, held up a package of the Cool Mint Listerine PocketPaks D'Souza invented, and announced, "I love these!" Inspired in 1996 by an edible paper he had seen in Japan, D'Souza, a Pfizer vice president who immigrated to the U.S. from Pakistan in 1978, spent 18 months with a team of dozens of scientists creating the strip. "First it stuck to the roof of our mouths," he says. "Then it was too brittle, and at times it was so strong people's eyes would tear up." Today D'Souza, 47 lives in Randolph, N.J., with his homemaker wife, Venetia, 46, son Russell, 17, and fraternal twins Adrian and Alicia, 16. http://people.aol.com/people/magazine/tableofcontents/0,10713,,00.html

15 Apr. India Today. Obituary. Francis Newton Souza. Excerpts: Souza's death was uncharacteristically calm. Nearly five decades after Stephen Spender published his brilliant autobiographical essay "Nirvana of a Maggot" in Encounter in 1955, this ever volatile 'devil in flesh' of Indian modernism was at last reconciled to his ultimate release and redemption. After the 1970s Souza was a lost and lonely soul in the anarchy of the Manhattan art market. In fact, a couple of years ago, an NRI writer had called him "one of New York's most well-kept secrets"!
