It has not proved possible to make alternative arrangements for the publication of the newsletter whilst I am on holiday. Therefore, the next issue may not appear till 14 Sept 2002. Hopefully there will be paid help in Goa to produce the newsletter in my absence in the future. Cornel DaCosta, ex-Mombasa, is writing a biography of Pio Gama Pinto, the Goan politician who was assassinated in 1964 in Nairobi. Cornel has Pio's family approval for this project and would be grateful for any information people may have about Pio, however insignificant it may appear to be. Speaking in the Goa Assembly the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that the 500-year-old Our Lady of Springs church at the Anjediva island has to be “shifted” as the Navy's Sea Bird project is all set for commissioning.

Feni is being recognised as an ethnic drink and exported to Australia, Germany, Britain and the Gulf according to Mac Vaz of Madame Rosa, a prominent distillery in Goa. Feni could soon be the new 'king of good times'. United Breweries, makers of the world famous Kingfisher beer, may soon market Goan feni in the international market. Chairman of United Breweries, Dr Vijay Mallya, explained that efforts were being made to market feni internationally. “Except the unfortunate smell of it, it is very good drink.” Herald (Goa) 20 Aug.

Goa’s Chief Minister said that the NRI cell would be strengthened. He said that one NRI Goan called on him and started crying after somebody had sold his ancestral land. Also, Ms Reita Faria, India’s first Miss World, had emigrated to Australia with her daughters only to see that her ancestral property at Anjuna had been usurped by others. From Navhind Times 21 Aug.
