From Raul Fernandes. Gulf International Promotions of Dubai are willing to host a Mini Goan World Cup Football Tournament in Dubai, in March 2003, to coincide with the Dubai Shopping Festival. We are in the process of having a Mural done outlining the villages of Goa, especially those along the Beach. Ben D'Costa, 49, shop owner of Captain's Table, a Dartford off-licence, spoke of his terror after being held up by a masked raider with an electro-shock stun gun. Mr D'Costa pressed the panic alarm but the robber made off with more than £1,000. The incident took place on June 30, at 10.15pm. 426 words. 8 Jul. Dartford News Shopper.

When the Queen visited Catford, pupils from across the Borough lined the streets. St Saviour's teacher Oliver Pereira [of Bromley], who wore Union Jack socks and hat as he waited in the crowd, said: "We love the Queen at our school. There are about 120 pupils here today." The Daily Mail, 8 July, devoted a two-page spread to Why Are Women So Scared Of Marriage. In 378 words interview, Tracy Fernandes, 32, who lives in her own house in Reading, Berkshire explains why she cherishes her independence… most of the men she has met don't seem to be trustworthy… She has had seven marriage proposals, including one from the father of her child, but she has never been tempted to accept. "If I do change my mind it will be when I'm about 50."

Clybiau Plant Cymru has won a £28,488 grant to provide new after-school clubs across the county. Karen Pereira the organiser said: "These clubs are invaluable for working families, children who have been referred by social services and young people who want to socialise with people their own age." From George Pinto: Goa Day was celebrated early in New York this year. Several Goans met for dinner at the Maharaja Restaurant in midtown Manhattan on July 2, 2002. Dr. Eric Pinto and author Victor Rangel-Rebeiro organized the gathering. Goa Day will be celebrated internationally, with the biggest celebrations in London and Portugal on August 17, 18.

From Santosh Helekar: The Sixth Biennial Convention of the Goan Organization in America, attended by over 200 Goans, was a Blast! The Convention souvenir document will be loaded in PDF format on the website, www.goanconvention.org within a few days. It will contain articles by Alfred Braganza on Goan culture, George Pinto on Goa Sudharop, Rene Barreto on Goa Day and Dr. N. S. Dumo on Participatory Democracy in Goa. "Drug smuggling, which feeds the footloose tourist in Goa, is rampant. The port city of Vasco-da-Gama is considered the gateway of drug traffickers. Security at the docks is lax. Yachts visiting this affluent port city are suspected to be ferrying drugs to and from Europe, the United States and the West Indies. At least six yachts have visited Vasco in the last three months." State Election Commissioner, Prabhakar Timble, has stressed the need for a law to address the problem of tourism-related paedophilia and to ensure that the existing laws were implemented. 6. July. Times of India. Goans overseas chart a holy trail on Net by Fred Noronha. The Catholic Goan Network (CGN) first created an electronic mailing list and has now set up a website, www.catholic-goan-network.net It has members from 15 countries, mainly expatriates. It was founded by Patrick de Souza, 69, who migrated to the US in 1972. 454 words.
