From The Gomantak Times 3 June: The Goan Association (UK) has instituted a scholarship in memory of late Romeo da Silva of Navelim for Accountancy. The student availing of this scholarship must be a domicile of Navelim, Salcete, Goa and pursuing higher studies in a college in Goa.

Calling all Goans in the Borough of Croydon ... a small group of Croydon Goans intend to form a locally based organisation to look after the social and welfare needs of their Community. From The Goan Cultural Society UK: We would like to convey our sincere apologies to our theatregoers in Leicester. Due to unforeseen circumstances we were unable to stage the Mike Alfonso's "CHUKH" "tiatr" in Leicester on 2nd June 2002.

They are involved yet again in bringing teachers from Goa to the UK for work experience. £600 of the £2,400 target was raised at a Goan dinner in a Newcastle Yacht Club. Gulf Air is planning charters from the Gulf to Goa from November this year. United Arab Emirates is reported to be considering the possibility of also doing so.

Travel advice for India. The UK Govt. (and many others) has advised against travel to India, including Goa, for the time being. Further details are available at: http://www.fco.gov.uk/travel If you do decide to go, remember to check carefully with your travel insurance as the policy may be invalid for India. Unless the situation improves, charter flights are likely to be cancelled. From Leicester Mercury, 1 Jun.: … Keith Vaz has cancelled a visit to India next month.

30 May. Catering And Hotel Keeper. Headline: Immigration eased but staff shortages persist. Excerpt: At Fernandez Vaz Solicitors, Maria Fernandez helps restaurateurs in making applications. She said that a year ago it was only the large, well-established restaurants that were paying legal fees of between £500 and £2,500 plus relocation costs to bring in new talent. But now the smaller, neighbourhood businesses are following suit, driven by the demand for authenticity and quality. From Sara Ferrao: Brendon DeSouza, an 11-year-old leukemia patient from Mississauga was one of the five new in-depth and compelling patient stories featured in The Sick Kids Miracle Weekend, broadcast on 1-2 June on CTV which raised over $6 m. 3 Jun. The Globe and Mail. Headline: Lower costs help mitigate brain drain. Excerpt: Joseph D'Cruz, a business professor at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto said foreign businesses have been attracted to Canada for years because of its lower labour costs, especially when compared with the United States because of employee loyalty, and universal health care system.

Pradip Rodrigues of Mississauga writes: Many immigrants coming into the country these days have absolutely no intention of assimilating and end up holding on to beliefs and traditions that even those in their native lands have shed. For full text, 196 words, Click here... Pradip Rodrigues, a recent immigrant to Canada from Bombay where he trained as a journalist, had a previous letter in the Toronto Star, 18 Mar. 2002. He wrote on the thousands of professionals who arrive in Canada every year and are unable to find work in their chosen fields.

The British Deputy High Commission in Bombay has reduced visa services and applications will not be accepted for the time being from those who have not travelled to the UK earlier.

ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS: Writing in The Asian Age on 31 May, Pamela D’Mello correctly predicted a nail biting finish to the Goa Assembly Election. And what a cliffhanger it was! The BJP and Congress started off with level pegging. Then the BJP drew ahead. Congress followed with a late spurt and it was 16 seats each for what seemed an eternity.
