GoaNet-UK is a free weekly Newsletter, which focuses on the UK Goan Community. The aim is to provide a summary of key news items relating to Goans Worldwide and a listing of UK Goan Community news and events.

The newsletter is a voluntary Community resource and relies on members providing relevant information. Only achievements acknowledged recently in the Press, or other media, qualifies for insertion. Your contributions will be attributed to you in the newsletter unless you indicate otherwise. Please note that all announcements must be limited to a maximum of 50 words.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Goan Cultural Society UK will have its first Konkani Singing Contest in UK, as part of the GOA Day 2002 celebration. The show will be staged in South London on 11th August 2002. NEWS HEADLINES

The major news from this Goa this week is that the Goa Assembly was dissolved on Wed. 27 Feb. Mr Parrikar is to continue as caretaker CM and claims that the move is to allow the BJP to seek a mandate from the people in a fresh election. However, rumours persist the decision was a pre-emptive strike to counter the political coup, which was in the making. Check www.goacom.com/news for details and updates.

Karnataka Police has recently set up a cyber-crime police station and has tracked authors of anonymous e-mail threats and misrepresentation of e-mail even when cyber cafes have been used to send them. A 38-year-old British woman, Ms Janet Colin, drowned at the Candolim beach last Saturday.

The involvement of the laity and women in the mission of the Church in Goa and Daman, besides the eradication of all forms of discrimination, were pledges undertaken at the week-long Diocesan Synod, which ended last week.

This week a new accident and emergency service has been launched in Goa. Six ambulances stationed around Goa will respond to the 102 emergency telephone number. The service is called the Goa Accident Trauma Emergency Services 102.

22 Feb. Evening Mail (Birmingham). Fifteen students and some staff of Sandwell College are heading off to Goa to help orphaned children and save the lives of hundreds of animals. Sandwell General Hospital has donated medical equipment to an animal refuge shelter in Goa and also aid to children in orphanages.

26 Feb. The Evening Standard (London), The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has a Michael Sweerts exhibition from 9 March to 20 May. 28 Feb. Daily Telegraph. Storm clouds that are gathering over India's hockey coach Cedric D'Souza after Malaysia defeated India in the World Cup. D' Souza, who is one of the most respected coaches in the world, asked for a police escort after being abused by supporters as he left the pitch. Speculation was also rife that major sums had been lost by gamblers who had wagered on an Indian victory.
