Henry & The Moonrakers. The Moonraker group was founded in 1978, playing in the Toronto area for dances, weddings, parties, etc. The group’s band leader and vocalist is Henry Braganza from Kenya. He appeared there on radio and television with his own show. He performed for tourists and guest at hotels all over Kenya, such as the Inter-Continental, New Stanley and the Millimani Hotel. Accompanying him with the Moonrakers is Frank Baretto, a professional keyboard player, Joe D'Souza, on saxophone and Brian Rodrigues on the guitar.

23 Jul. Frederick Noronha writes on the extraordinary quest of Melvyn Misquita, a Goa journalist, in piecing together the fate of the 40 Goans who were on board the S.S. Britannia, which was sunk on the West African coast by the Germans in 1941. One of the lifeboats drifted to Brazil with a Goan survivor, Louis Albino de Souza of Aldona. Misquita even discovered an 83-year-old vice-admiral in Britain who knew the Goans on board. He has also had queries from USA and UK who have had relatives serving on the Britannia. 23 Jul. Economic Times. A consortium of mobile phone operators have launched a new revolutionary matrimonial service, Life Partner, which will enable its subscribers to find their prospective life partners through their mobile phones.

26 Jul. Indian Express. Two Goan women film-makers, Deepti Datt and Venita Coelho have teamed to form Fire Horse Films to break stereotypes of Indian womanhood as perpetuated by popular male directors. Deepti Datt is directing a documentary Bombay Stories and Venita Coelho is scripting the feature Monsters Under Bed. Datt’s next film, is about a couple from Bombay who start a five star restaurant in a Goan mansion. For full text, click here.

27 Jul. Gomantak Times. Satish Nayak writes. “The villagers of Santana, Telaulim, celebrate the Touxeachem Fest (the feast of cucumbers) today. It is the feast of their patroness St Anne, reputed to be a great giver and Christians and Hindus alike flock to her with offerings of spoons, 'urid' (pulses) and cucumbers, chanting: Senhora, tomai esta colher e dai-me mulher (Lady, take this spoon and give me a wife); OR (Lady, take this 'urid' and give me a husband); OR (Lady, take this cucumber and give me a child)”

16 Jul. BBC 16 Jul. A Kenyan author Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor, has won the Caine Prize for African Writing for her short story Weight of Whispers. 23 Jul. Buffalo News. Anna May Greene died on July 19, aged 98. She volunteered as a fund-raiser for numerous causes, notably the Catholic mission schools in Goa, India, where she sponsored the education of teachers, priests and disadvantaged children from the lowest castes of Indian society.

24 Jul. Montreal Gazette. Following a visit to Goa in 1999, Jane and Peter Hodgetts of St. Lazare, Montreal, have already hosted six garage sales in aid of the El-Shaddai Charitable Trust (www.Elshaddaigoa.com) which runs orphanages in Goa. Neighbors Maureen and Winston Rodrigues joined the effort. "That's where I come from, you can relate to the culture of the kids," Rodrigues said. “If everyone helps in a little way, it makes a big difference," she added. Hodgetts will hold her next sale on Aug. 23 and 24.

25 July. Khaleej Times (U.A.E). Goa, the favourite of tourists worldwide with its swaying palms and beautiful beaches has a signature of its own. This summer, there is a direct flight to Goa every week that holidayers can avail of.

27 Jul. The Jakarta Post. Goa-based fashion designer Wendell Rodricks says "I'm a working person's designer. I believe in the democracy of fashion. I don't want only rich people to buy my clothes.” Rodricks, who has shown in Germany and also in Paris and Southeast Asia, is among the few who want "to stay small and treat the clothes like art".

27 July. Sun Herald (Sydney). The Top 10 Beaches of the world. Calangute Beach, Goa, India. "Christmas in Goa" was the mantra for thousands of helio- and psycho-tropic hippies on the 1970s overland trail. Calangute's palm-fringed kilometres were invaded annually by some of the most up-beat and beat-up minds of their generation. The beach today is both more built-up and calmed down. Overdevelopment hasn't been kind to its little fishing hamlets but the Arabian Sea full moons are as spellbinding as ever.

Traditional Indian healers, or 'hakims', were once in great demand among Goa's Portuguese rulers, who were often offered cures like cow's urine to "gain colour", says Fatima da Silva Gracias, a researcher. Excerpts: Goa is the antidote to frantic Bombay, a place where there's always time for a swim, or a stroll in your newest Hawaiian shirt, which says something about the Goans' relaxed attitude to life.
