In the boys' main doubles, Ferrao teamed up with regular partner Xavier Bramley (Crediton) and their five-match unbeaten run to the title saw a decisive 11-9, 4-11, 11-3 win over Tom Mansbridge and Alix Deakin of Dorset. Aires Rodrigues airesrod@goatelecom.com has long been a man of many roles. Student leader, rabble-rouser, a youngster growing up in the confused 'seventies searching for a role in life, expat Goan, public-spirited lawyer, the helpful soul... you could see in him one or more of these identities, depending on which face of Rodrigues you've encountered. One of the few Goan expats who actually returned back -- to live with all the myriad of difficulties of a dysfunctional, far-from-efficient Third World society -- Rodrigues was one of the key moving spirits behind trying to network Goan expats in the late 'nineties. Once seen as a supporter of the BJP when he was based in the UK, leading to a whisper campaign that he was eyeing a career in politics, Rodrigues was quick to change his stand on returning home and encountering the reality more closely. So, his conspicuous absence from the 2002 Overseas Goan Convention didn't come as a big surprise. But perhaps this occasion could be a peg on which to hang on a Q-and-A to gain an understanding of how he perceives issues. The Fred Noronha interview appeared on GoaNet and is at http://www.goacom.com/news/news2002/dec/msg00074.html

28 Dec. The Guardian. Ian Holland writes: My girlfriend and I are visiting Goa in March. As an insulin-dependent diabetic, will it be safe for her to take the anti-malarials proguanil hydrochloride and chloroquine phosphate? Dr Jules Eden replies: Yes. A diabetic can take any of the available anti-malarials. My only concern would be with Lariam, which is known to cause a few psychological side effects, including confusion, depression and irritability: these could be mistaken for the warning signs of a potential hypoglycaemic attack. But remember, there are other problems for a diabetic abroad. She must avoid diarrhoea, carry a doctor's note for customs if she has needles, and keep insulin at the correct temperature

Two of the coolest restaurants in the country right now are Toronto's Xacutti (Bombay fish and chips) and Vancouver's Vij (lamb chops with fenugreek)….the streets of London today, where the very popular Brit-Indie takeaway is ubiquitous. Wanda White, treasurer of the town's senior center, said the new doctor made a good first impression. "She's very nice, very efficient," White said. Gomes said she's glad it worked out for her and her patients. "It's been going good -- even better, maybe," she said. "The people here are very nice."
