On 23 June the BBC World Service Radio broadcast a programme by Dr Raj Persaud on mental illness in Goa. He found that there is huge stigma associated with mental illness and patients are unwilling to come forward. However, things are beginning to change. The Sangath Centre in Goa takes its message out to the countryside, targeting women and adolescents at risk from drug abuse and mental illness. London-trained psychiatrist Vikram Patel has recently returned to Goa to take up the challenge. Dr Persaud is married to Dr Francesca Cordeiro (ex-Saligao), an ophthalmologist specialising in the treatment of Glaucoma. They live in Berkshire.

30 Jun. The Times. Blaise De Souza, 46, BA baggage compliance manager, London Heathrow, talks about the stress of his job. He is married to Chantal and father to Byron, 17, and Cherrelle, 14. He plays hockey and enjoys a very active social life. [Blaise is ex-Mombasa]. Full text, 367 words at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/

"I was approached by Sky TV to do live performances after they heard my single ‘There She Goes Again’. Ever since, I have been performing all over the world," says the curly-haired crooner. The album is "a mix of blues, rock and country with the tabla. The Indian influence is predominant everywhere and people love it". And just in case his songs don't stop you in your tracks, his looks will. [Oliver Sean is touring UK 25 Sept to 4 Nov. Check out venues at http://www.geocities.com/stud_man_98/england.html]

3 July. Wiltshire Gazette & Herald. Headline: Church stalwart dies in car crash.
ELLIS D'SOUZA, 72, of Sarum Drive, Devizes, was killed when her red Rover Metro was in a head-on collision with a two-seater Mercedes car. She had been a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in St Joseph's Place for the last decade. Parish priest Father Bosco Lobo paid tribute to her. He said: "She was a very helpful lady. She organised the rotas for cleaning the church and for making coffee on Sunday mornings. At every function in the church she would be there, lending a hand. Father Bosco has visited her family, including Mr D'Souza and the couple's children, Patrick, Cheryl and Tom, who came from London to the family home. Father Bosco said: "Mr D'Souza is taking it very badly. He is devastated." Text at:

28 Jun. The Navhind Times. Excerpts: Palmira Coutinho was the only lady photographer of her times. She was recently filmed and interviewed by BBC. She said, “Some 30 years ago David Bailey had come to Goa and he happened to step into my studio. Now I came to know through the BBC that he has chosen my picture to be profiled on the cover page of his book. I was interviewed and filmed by the BBC. They were surprised to see me so active perhaps they expected to see an old bed-ridden lady and so I jokingly told them that I can not just click but I can walk, I can talk and also run at this age.

IN THE NEWS

27 Jun. The Independent. Sir Denis Thatcher died yesterday. Excerpt: When, in Goa for the Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting, the electricity failed as he was trying to shave himself in a chalet, Denis emerged into the open, soap-suds still adorning his face, and surprised fellow Commonwealth leaders in adjoining chalets by bellowing out: "The buggeration factor is high and growing in this part of the world..."

27 Jun. The Scotsman. Herman Rodrigues who runs the Suruchi restaurants (http://suruchirestaurant.co.uk/) in Edinburgh observes that unfortunately very complex and fine cooking has been reduced to post-lager cuisine. His menu is also written in Scots, which has proved very popular. The proof? "I've had several hundred copies stolen," Herman sighs.

28 Jun. Toronto Sun. Headline: Goan League Is A Family Affair. Feature length article on Toronto’s Inter-village Goan soccer league, the first and only sporting association in the 15,000 strong Goan community in Toronto. It was started by Everest Fernandes. Cyprian D'Cruz points out the popularity of the game in Goa too. For second generation Goans, soccer is the No. 1 sport. “Field hockey used to be the sport when our parents first came here," said Conrad Collaco adding that the league is starting to bring the community together and give Goans a sense of culture. The teams play every Sunday, each game attracting spectators lugging lawn chairs. "It's a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon," said Ron Montero, while having a barbeque with teammates and family. "It has become a community thing" For full text click here.

28 Jun Rocky Mountain News. The Real Appeal of America. By Dinesh D'Souza. Excerpts: The conventional wisdom is that immigrants come to America to get rich. But there is more. America offers a degree of mobility and opportunity unavailable elsewhere. Had I remained in India, I would undoubtedly have married a woman of my identical religious and socioeconomic background. I would face relentless pressure to become an engineer or a doctor. My socialization would have been entirely within my own ethnic community. By coming to America, I have seen my life break free of these traditional confines. I married a woman of English, Scotch-Irish, French, and German ancestry. Full text at:

2 Jul. Malayala Manorama. Excerpts: In Canada marriages between members of the same sex are becoming increasingly common. Lawyer Maretta Miranda, whose parents are from Goa, is married to Joanna Radbord. "Joanna is expecting a baby and with this new ruling, I will become the child's parent automatically without going through an adoption process," she said. Miranda and Radbord have been together for 10 years and had a church wedding last year. Full text, 725 words, click here.
