On 19 Jun. 2003 the House of Lords delivered its judgement in the case of Don D'Souza v. London Borough of Lambeth. The findings were widely reported in the media. The brief details are: In 1997 Don D'Souza of Surbiton, Surrey, was awarded record £358,288 compensation from Lambeth council after a seven-year discrimination battle. The Employment Appeal Tribunal called the case "the worst case of unlawful race discrimination" it ever had to consider.

Extracts:
He was dismissed after he had complained of racial discrimination.
His employers dismissed him as "paranoid".
He was labelled a "nutter" by Lambeth's chief executive.
After an eight-year battle he secured an unprecedented four industrial tribunal rulings against his former employer.
The Evening Standard called the award "recklessly irresponsible, another example of the crazy compensation culture, driven jointly by the lawyers and the financial services industry, who are dancing a lucrative tango."
