16 May. Kent Messenger. Morel D'Souza, moreldsouza@maidstone.gov.uk became the first Maidstone mayor from an ethnic minority when he was sworn in on Wednesday. His dream is an inclusive society where all the people of Maidstone work together. Morel was born in Nairobi and educated in Goa. He came to Britain in 1968. The Mayoress is his wife, Karin and they have a son, Carl, and a daughter, Jessica. For full text of article, click here.

Two teachers from Goa, Newton D'Souza and Wilma Pereira, who are currently in the UK on a teacher exchange project have been featured on a teletext information page on BBC Television. Dr Alba De Souza was a finalist in the Asian Women Of Achievement Awards 2003. The citation read: Alba has worked consistently over 30 years to promote the advancement of education in developing countries, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa. Her work has been carried out on behalf of governments, international aid agencies and bodies such as UNESCO and UNICEF. Through her work, Alba has had a direct impact on educational opportunities for millions of the world's poorest people, with particular focus on the education of girls and young women.
She has successfully linked her initiatives in education to the other major symptoms and causes of poverty - nutrition and healthcare. Her work has been recognised by the Government of Kenya, the United Nations and the Rockefeller Foundation.

19 May. Lt Gen Candeth who led the Indian Army in liberating Goa in 1961, died in his sleep at his residence in New Delhi. He was 87 and an Anglo-Indian by birth.

21 May. Evening Standard (London). Cafe Spice Namaste, 16 Prescot Street, E1. Parsee chef Cyrus Todiwala, in the original Namaste in Alie Street, was the first Indian chef in London to stretch our eyes and incredulity with creative Indian cooking based on regional dishes, in particular those from Goa. The large, colourful premises here give scope to his imagination and energy.

22 May. The Guardian. The annual National Geographic magazine quiz was won this year by James Williams, a 14-year-old from Washington. The competition went to a second tiebreaker. The deciding question: "Goa, a state in southwestern India, was a possession of which country until 1961?''
