Warren Noronha’s (ex-Nairobi), London Fashion Week show last week was greeted with the usual accolades. It is impossible to keep up with the media attention that he attracts but an attempt has been made this week to list some of the coverage in a supplement which it is hoped to update. You will find biographical info about him and his family, a video link to an interview with him and catwalk photographs of some of his shows. Cliff Pereira has launched his profusely illustrated narrative on the Goans in the Port of London. He examines the evidence of Goans in Deptford in the 18th century and finishes with look at the Goan Community of London today. There are sections on A maritime culture; The priest and the company; The Goans of Bombay; Lascars in the East End; Colonial clerks; The exodus. There is also a Konkani translation of the full text. From Tony & Sally D’Costa Thank you to all who supported the Pilar Fund Raising Social held in Crawley Sussex on the 20th Sept. The Event was a Big success from which a Total sum of £3500 was raised. A cheque for this amount has been presented to the Pilar Fathers at their Parish in Deptford London. The money raised will go to sponsoring Seminarians to the Priesthood in GOA.

Money, drugs & sex were the three topics hotly debated at the second Asian Youth Conference, organised by Asian Voice newspaper that took place on 20th Sept. 2003 at the House of Commons. More than a hundred representatives from Asian youth groups, business and the community gathered to debate issues like the funding of higher education, drugs in the Asian community and the issue of Asian female role models. 29 Sep. Express Hotelier & Caterer. Moving beyond its long flaunted troika of sun, sand and surf, Goa has earmarked land for the construction of its first IT savvy beach resort. The 44-acre plot, on Goa’s northern beach of Arambol is up for construction bids. 2 Oct. Navhind Times. The Goa Assembly proceedings of 1 Oct. were in chaos after the opposition lodged a noisy protest on the issue of a legal notice by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar to some local newspapers asking them to refrain from publishing statements “defamatory” to him. http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=news&Story_ID=100217

26 Sep. TradeWinds (Norway). The veteran cruise ship (built 1966) Empress has been bought by Kerala-based Jaisu Shipping for $1.3m. It will be used for cruises between Mumbai, Goa and Cochin beginning in December.

27 Sep. Daily Star. Odyssey Worldwide has added six new hotels to its Goa brochure for 2003-04. Prices start at £465 for 14 nights B&B at the Falcon Resort in Calangute.

28 Sep. The Observer. Book review: A Place in the Sun - Dream Homes Within Your Reach, by Fanny Blake £16.99, Channel 4 Books (Macmillan). Mark and Ali, one of the buying couples, decided to give up on the suggestions in Italy and ended up returning to their 'life-long love affair with India' by buying a house in Goa.

30 Sep. Hindustan Times. Speaking in Chicago, Victor Menezes, senior vice chairman of Citigroup, said that the U.S. offers many opportunities for freedom and wealth but robs people's souls. Menezes highlighted the importance of a close knit, caring family. He said that he found that Indian immigrants to several other places like East Africa were able to maintain their heritage and culture after several generations.
