The UK media has been buzzing this week with the news that killer of Edgar Fernandes escaped justice despite being sentenced to 16 years imprisonment. Mohammed Aly has been found guilty of the murder of 37-year-old London librarian, Edgar Fernandes but he failed to turn up in Court. Matthias Fernandes, Edgar’s brother and Leicester East MP Keith Vaz had travelled to Istanbul for the court hearing. Mohammed Aly is thought to have fled to his native Egypt. Matthias Fernandes said, “We are devastated. After all our efforts, Aly has escaped." Mr Vaz said he would be asking the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, to put pressure on the Egyptian authorities to seize Aly. See

Two items from Flavio Gracias, President G.O.A. (UK):

1. G.O.A Goan Festival 27th July’ 03
This is the one event that is eagerly awaited for, as it has a proven success rate year after year. The G.O.A (UK), in conjunction with Goan Organisations in the UK, organises this festival, its success being attributed to the hard work of all the volunteers, in some cases entire families being involved. After the Holy Mass, celebrated by Fr. Oliver Antao, the festival was formally opened. This festival certainly brings out the Goan in everyone, resulting in a totally tropical atmosphere as well as taste! So very well done to all involved on another successful year, enjoyed by a crowd of approximately 3000. Thank you too, to all the Bands, Bar & Food stalls & other stall holders for their cooperation and goodwill..

2. Youth
The continued success of the Youth Discos as organised by Lily, Tony, Wilma, Cedric and friends, proves that Goan youngsters are well and truly up for it! Long may this continue as they are the future of the Association. Make a date in your diaries for the next one scheduled for 29th November’03.
