UK Goan Festival: 29 July 2007
From Mafalda-Anne de’Sa. PR Director GOA (UK): Mitcham: Sunday 29/7/07: The Goan Festival organised by the Goan Association UK in conjunction with the village organisations and spearheaded by Nina & Diego Pinto attracted a record crowd. The event opened with a celebratory Mass at 12.30 pm with Principal Celebrant Rev. Father Oliver Antao and 4 concelebrants, accompanied by the delightful Childrens’ Choir of the Goan Musical Society. The attendance at Mass was the highest ever recorded in the history of the Festival.

Stalls featuring Arts & Craft, Kiddies Corner, Music CD’s, Pickles, Masalas, Goa Sausages, Goan Sweets, Faluda, Ice-cream, were among those that basked in the sunshine, tempting the taste buds! Several Goan caterers were on hand serving all the delectable Goan specialities, while Carvalhos Bar effectively quenched our thirst. Emceed by Jacinto Fernandes & Colin Almedia, the entertainment began with music provided by NIGHTLIFE & “SHINE” a Swindon based band. The floor shows included 3 cultural acts by the Goan Cultural Society, The Konkani Dramatic Society (KDA) & Goans “R” Us. A fashion show organised by Norma Menezes- Rahim & Anita Rebello, saw our Goan models sashay down the catwalk, while Elvis was alive for the day, in the form of Joaquim Rodrigues!

On behalf of the organising committee, Flavio Gracias, President of G.O.A.UK would like to thank all helpers (some of whom arrived at 6am in the morning!) participants and the crowd for an incident free occasion. Events of this magnitude can only be possible and successful because of the generous spirit of its volunteers. In the words of Diego Pinto, Vice-President of the GOA UK “Harmony begets success”

With legislators switching allegiances 50-odd days after being elected, Goans the world over of various political persuasions were jousting with each other over the merits of the Kamat Govt. retaining power and whether those that tried to usurp power were any more altruistic in their intentions.

Another recurring theme is whether religious personalities have a right to vent a political message from the precincts of the pulpit or temple. While some argued that a priest was still a citizen of the land and was only exercising his democratic rights; others argued that a priest in conveying a political message from the pulpit was mixing religion and politics. The present debate was initiated when it was observed that Fr Antimo Gomes, the parish priest of Panaji was soliciting President's Rule for Goa in a quote attributed to him in the local press in Goa.

Rajan Parrikar is at it again. He is back in Goa and is taking several pictures of entire hillsides being denuded of their vegetation and prepped for construction of homes that appear to cater to the rich non-Goans.

Samir Umarye has begun writing in with newsclips of events in Bicholim. This gives news a different perspective as it comes from an individual who actually lives in that locality as compared to reading the same news story on a tabloid or newspaper.

There has been an interesting debate ongoing between Dr Helekar, Bhandare and some others on the merits of Astrology, Ayurveda and Vedic math.

The Arts and Entertainment (A&E) is also covered on Goanet. Recent events included a violin performance by Milind Raikar (violin) in the USA.

Domnic Fernandes, the author of Domnic's Goa was at it again – providing lyrics to Konkani songs. Last week he sent in the lyrics of the Konkani song "MOLLBAILO DOV" from the 'Amchem Noxib' film.

This past week there was also a request for assistance in locating Sister Lorraine-Marie Paul from one of her former students who is now a scientist working on Cancer Research in London.

Cornel D’Costa is on holiday
