GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

Medical tourism is now an established feature in Goa/India and many travel from the West to avail of such medical provision. To meet their needs as well as that of local people, a new book titled Healthcare and the Rights of People may be entirely timely and appropriate for patients and their families, health professionals, NGOs, care providers and health workers. What do Goan Voice UK readers make the contention that, "Goa's traditional bullfights, which have been banned by the High Court, are resurfacing in the coastal state [Goa] with active political patronage..." and with the police turning a blind eye to such occurrences?

Goanetter Mervyn Maciel and a prolific writer, is keen to record for posterity, the contribution of Goan stewards who worked in the former East African Railways and Harbours administration or the former K.U.R.--Kenya and Uganda Railways. Any recall in this area will be welcomed by Mervyn at mervynels.watuwashamba@googlemail.com

For a regular succinct summary of News Headlines from Goa, please see F. Noronha's contribution on Goanet. The latest includes news about the political scene, education, an offbeat section, and a number of valuable quotes which includes the following..."But the broader question, seemingly, was not asked and, obviously, remained unanswered (at a recent debate on Goan identity) : how does one define "Goenkarpon"? Certainly, our 'Bangarachem Goem' did not always have the configuration the Portuguese gave it..."The above quote is surely an excellent starting point for GVUK readers to engage in discussion on Goanet--"where Goans connect."

Finally, my thanks are due to Bosco D'Mello for stepping in while I was away and contributing to three weeks of Goanet Highlights for the Goan Voice UK.
