The world's top secret beaches
18 Jan: The Times (UK). Twenty years ago, Benaulim in Goa had one bar, a waiter called Gracious [sic], and pigs hovering under the guesthouse long-drops. Better still, I’ll find the new Benaulim. Hop over the state boundary into Maharashtra, for example, and the Konkan coast has the sort of beaches Goa grew fat on — without the techno-raves. Goa may have the name and the gorgeous Catholic churches, but it also has crowds of idiots twirling ribbons on the beach. Not Ganpatipule. Click here.

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

While some negative views have been expressed about the recent Global Goans Convention (2007) in Goa, a fairly positive view has been expressed, among others, by Celina Pereira who attended the Convention from the USA.

How do priests in Goa subsidise themselves and their life styles? Such a question has generated much debate and discussion that Goan Voice (UK) readers should find quite interesting. Comments on this issue would be most welcome by Goanet.

The much derided Regional Plan 2011 for Goa appears to have been withdrawn after much concerted agitation from local people. However, is the 2011 Plan really withdrawn or is this no more than a "pacificatory move?" Find out about such scepticism from an interesting article, among others, by Dr Beverley de Sequeira.

Understandably, the experience of Shilpa Shetty on Ch 4 in the Celebrity Big Brother UK programme has featured extensively on media across the world. However, Goanetters have also presented their 'distinctive' diverse comments on the issue.

There appears to be much on Goanet currently about alleged incursions into Goa by the Russian Mafia. A substantial article on this issue, titled Molotov on Mandovi...the Russian mafia in Goa is definitely worth reading for so much detail within it.

Finally, do read a short article by Roland Francis, titled Life Seems Cheap in Goa. He says that, "... in Goa, the drowning of people that occurs with ...frequency especially from Indian tour groups makes a minor dent in the local press and people's reactions, despite the precious loss of young life...it's almost as if ---what's another visitor's life worth?"
