Goa is a favourite with retailers
9 July: Moneycontrol.com. Goa has always been India's favourite tourist destination. Now it's become a favourite with retailers as well. A few global brands have put Goa on the retail map … now there's Nike, Reebok and Addidas. Their success has attracted other retailers to Goa. That's because retailers have discovered Goa's global tourists are happy to loosen their purse-strings … Developers are eyeing Goa as well. Pan Indian groups such as Emaar Mfg, DLF, Parsvnath, Paras Buildtech and JMD Group plan mega retail infrastructure in places like Panaji and Dona Paula. But nalysts say developers expect rents of between Rs 120 and 150 a square foot a month. And that's too high for a seasonal market like Goa. So, retailers are reticent. But Goa's state government is doing its bit to attract retailers. It has opened up more seaface vistas, where hospitality and entertainment can be combined with retail. It's expanding the tourism corridor and has included a retail component in the plans.Click here.

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS BY CORNEL DACOSTA

Gabe Menezes supplied Goanet an interesting short piece titled Fado Fad. It tells us about Sonia Shirsat and her musical group Fado Goa. Details are provided about how Sonia and her fellow musicians from Goa, entertained an appreciative audience in Lisbon with their haunting Portuguese folk music on the occasion of Portugal taking over the periodic Presidency of the European Union.

Aires Rodrigues from Ribander, Goa, has often provided excellent in-depth reviews on political issues in Goa. Recently, he spelt out what he considers to be the Challenges Ahead for Digambar Kamat, the new Chief Minister of Goa. There is much to read from Aires and the next sentence provides a clue as to the contents of the substantial article..."We need to have Goa's planned development with an environmental vision by first improving Goa's crumbling basic infrastructure while tackling serious issues like garbage and vehicle parking in cities as a top priority."

From time to time, Marcos Gomes-Catao has generated excellent articles for Goanet and recently, his substantial piece titled Reminiscences of my Goan Youth: The First Mass, tells us about an individual's route to the priesthood, the significance of the seminary and the celebratory first mass of a new priest. There is ever so much packed into this article and it really makes excellent reading.

Cedric da Costa raises many interesting issues on the theme of communalism in an article titled Restoring Communal Harmony in Goa: Where to Begin? It is in the form of a response to Wilson Mazarello. Clearly, Goan Voice (UK) readers could well join in this discussion.

Fred Noronha in jocular mood in Goa, asked in an article recently, "How many Goans are out there, really?" He then offered various estimates of Goan numbers in places like Lisbon, Mumbai, Toronto, Karachi, London etc. Fred endeavoured to use the term "Goan" in as flexible a way as possible and then concluded that, "Goa has long been, and will probably continue to be, a melting pot, a fruit-salad or a South Asian goulash..." Seriously though, I wonder what our GV(UK) readers' best estimates might be about the numbers of those of Goan origin who are currently resident in different parts of the Goan Diaspora? Please let Goanet have your best estimates, including, the many of Goan origin who have keen hopes to visit Goa for the very first time. Very recently, a good friend of mine succeeded in this objective, most appreciatively, at the tender age of sixty-five! I am sure Fred would agree that, it can never be too late to visit and draw upon the wonderful joys of Goa!

Finally, do read a fascinating piece by Rui Nuvo on the dowry system. This may indeed be a vanishing theme in Goan UK circles but is reputedly making a strong come-back among several Hindu communities in the UK. Rui's article however, examines the concept of the dowry for males and females in different parts of the world. The many strands to this theme represent an interesting contrast to Goanet becoming a bit bogged down recently in endless but fascinating discussions about religion!

More details can be found at the Goanet archives at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ Or to subscribe to Goanet, send an email to subscribe@goanet.org
