GOANET HIGHLIGHTS BY BOSCO D'MELLO

Bhandare states that with substantial migration from all over India into Goa, the population of Muslims in Goa is increasing at a substantial rate. There have been cases of Goan village panchayats that have rejected applications to build a mosque in some villages.

Eric Pinto reminisced about getting an education in a Catholic school for less that Rs 10 a month four decades ago. A similar education in the US would now cost over $10,000.

The issue of casteism within the Catholic Church was raised once again within the context of an elitist debate. The subtleness with which the caste-card plays its hand within the church hierarchy is not missed by many Catholic Goans.

There was also a spritely debate on the philosophical dichotomy of monism and dualism. Then there are the issues of weighing these perspectives against scientific and religious indoctrination.

Eugene Correia writing in from Lisbon provided some notes on the recently held Goan Convention in that city that commemorated the 20th anniversary of Casa de Goa. Besides several attendees from Goa he was able to talk to average Portuguese citizens of Goan origin on the streets of Lisbon and discern the quality of life - professional and social for Goans who now lived there.

Marcos Gomes-Catao writes under a series called "Reminiscences of my Goan Youth". This past week he graphically described the First Mass as he remembers it while growing up in the 1940s. He also wrote a poem titled "SANS SOUCI*" - lazying on the river bank at ORDá , Candolim. Marcos is presently retired and living in the USA after living for many years in Brazil.

Lino Dourado provided the latest of his Konkani poems titled "Ruch Ietoch" (When the appetite comes). He also writes a humor column in Konkani titled "Aitaracheo Kaskutleo".

The exchange of lyrics of Konkani songs is another common feature on Goanet. Domnic Fernandes, the author of Domnic's Goa that was published in April 2007 is usually at the forefront of this initiative while Eddie Verdes ably assists whenever he can.

Goanet appears to be a useful resource. Suhas was looking for accommodation in New Delhi and posed a query on Goanet. Several people responded with ideas and suggestions that included accommodation at the Goa Sadan, a Government of Goa business/guest house in Delhi.

Cornel DaCosta is on holiday.
