GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

Increasingly, thanks to the Net, Goan Voice (UK) readers can read relatively little on the screen but discover a great deal more about what is of particular interest by accessing a number of websites presented with the news below.  Please let Goanet and the editor of the Goan Voice (UK) know if this approach is helpful.

Hopefully, many GV(UK) readers will discover information about and participate in the Convention of the Goan Diaspora into the World to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, June 15-17 2007.  Details at http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html

Do read an excellent piece on Goanet titled Best Bet by Valmiki Faleiro. It first appeared in the Herald Newspaper and is an insightful account about the elections next month in Goa and the advice he (Faleiro) would give in the selection of the best competing candidates for office.

A slightly unusual 'story' from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, tells us that a Goan Kudd was established as long ago as 1936 in the city to accommodate those Goans who travelled to Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat "in search of opportunities." The Kudd called the St Francis Xavier Goans House is a registered charity and the Trust responsible for it welcomes financial support for the ageing premises. Pictures and details of this old house can be seen at http://picasaweb.google.com/sfxgoahome Details have also appeared on Goanet in the past, about village based Goan kudds in Mumbai and elsewhere in India that go a long way back historically.

A report reputedly from Delhi says that India will ban women under 30 from emigrating to work as domestic help in the Gulf region, parts of Africa and South East Asia in a bid to curb sex trafficking. Well, what do GV(UK) readers think of this proposal? Do have your say on Goanet and join the many who have commented on this report.

Lest GV(UK) readers have forgotten, Domnic Fernandes’ recently published delightful book titled Goa-- A Nostalgic Romp Through a Bygone Era, is a perfect gift for any Goan, or anyone else, to understand Goa. It is available at cecilpinto@gmail.com

And finally, please note the opportunity via Goanet to download, free of charge, "very interesting Konkani music that was recorded around 50 years ago" by Prof Noel Flores, a Goan pianist of great repute at the Vienna School of Music in Austria.
