GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

Was Goa conquered in 1961 by India or was it liberated from Portuguese colonial rule? Will this question ever go away from Goanet? There may not be many new arguments presented on this issue but a regurgitation of respective claims are worth re-visiting regarding the historical situation.

The Russians are coming to Goa in a big way as are tourists from many other parts of the world. Indeed, I recently met a Brazilian woman in Rio who had specifically gone to Goa for six months hoping to encounter widespread Portuguese spoken there. Although disappointed in this hope, fortunately, her English was excellent to encourage her to extend her stay in Goa. Now, an interesting piece on Goanet tells us about the massive influx of tourists during this new holiday season. Of major concern is that, the availability of hotel accommodation is stretched to the limit. The problem however, is that the tourist industry is fickle and is a case of 'here today, gone tomorrow' to other tourist destinations. Therefore, building more hotels is not a straightforward case of meeting supply and demand. Do read more about this dilemma at click here.

In responding to an allegation of a female teacher in Goa molesting a child, and being first incarcerated and then bailed, this is what Selma Carvalho had to say in a well articulated piece titled More Absurd Rules Regarding Rape and Molestation Cases. "There has to be logic in our justice system. Not only is it corrupt beyond redemption but it is also inept beyond tolerance. At this rate, we are soon going to be a Banana Republic. No wait, a Coconut Republic." This issue of corruption and ineptness must be a source of much concern to local people as well as the thousands of tourists who could be easy prey to bribe seeking corrupt police.

In a detailed article titled An Illustrious Son of Goa, Zito Almeida tells us about the background of the Archbishop of Bombay, Rev Oswald Gracias, who was appointed on Oct 14, as a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. In this account, we also learn a lot about other Church luminaries who have done Goa proud.

Finally, do read an interesting article titled Divorce and Remarriage--Indian Style. Despite the force of tradition, the pattern of divorce and remarriage in India seems to be following the Western pattern and interesting explanations are offered for this growing phenomena. The quest for us however, is to examine if this is also happening in Goa? While in the past, some marriages ended unofficially through a variety of means, thankfully, Goa did not have the obscenity of bride burning in the kitchen, particularly over dowry demands after marriage. But is this entirely true? Please, will Goan Voice (UK) readers throw some light on this situation as well as on divorce and remarriage in Goa?
