GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by Cornel DaCosta

"Is consensual sex Okay?" This question from a Goanetter has generated a great variety of responses from the frivolous to the very serious. Almost simultaneously, Goan Voice (UK) readers will know that, there is serious discussion in the UK about legal attempts to apprehend the buyers of sex rather than the sellers of the commodity. This is partly because so many foreign women are duped into the trade by villains of all sorts. Here too the responses from people have been incredibly varied and it seems unlikely that the discussion will end soon.

The proliferation of casinos on vessels just off the coast in India is a concern to many. Some genuinely believe that Indian casinos will outdo Las Vegas in time. Clearly, Goa is an attractive place to locate several floating casinos but is this something to worry about? Comments on this issue are most welcome to Goanet.

Love and Samsara is a new book by Eusebio L. Rodrigues. The book is described thus: "Love and Samsara is moralistic fiction, an epic diorama of the world in the early 16th century, stretching from Europe to Asia, taking on Brazil, the curved coast of Africa, the Middle East, and the monsoon countries of South East Asia." Further information on this substantial book is at: click here.

With the tourist season to re-start soon, articles about how dealers use highly innovative ways to send drugs abroad from Goa are presented in several posts on Goanet. There is an implicit warning to tourists not to be duped by people who want to use unsuspecting tourists to transport their illicit goods for them.

Nearly five million Indians work in the Gulf and remit some $7 billion annually. Some funds find their way to Goa and help to enhance prosperity in the State. However, there is an increased sense of exploitation of many workers in the region. Indeed, so concerned is the Government of India that, it has summoned all heads of missions from the region to discuss the possibility of establishing a minimum wage and stricter controls to protect workers from all kinds of abuses. Some GVUK readers will know of Goan workers in the Gulf and it would be helpful for any details of their working conditions to be received by Goanet.

Finally, I refer yet again, to Domnic Fernandes, our indefatigable writer about Goa of Yesteryear. Following the publication of Domnic's Goa--A Nostalgic Romp Through a Bygone Age, he is on to Goanet once again with new material. Well, will there be a sequel to Domnic's first book? Methinks that this is a distinct possibility and his current two-part article on Clothing in Goa is really fascinating. In particular, the Kashtti receives excellent exposure.
