Swindon, UK: Immigrants fill up Catholic schools
21 Sep: Swindon Advertiser. Rising numbers of Catholic immigrants mean schools in Swindon town centre are full to capacity … Monsignor Richard Twomey, of Holy Rood Church, said: "The Catholic community in Swindon has increased enormously with 8,000 to 9,000 people from Goa arriving. There are huge numbers coming in and the population is growing drastically. The schools are full to capacity - we can't take any more children.” … He said that 400 pupils applied for 216 places at St Joseph's, in 2006. Coun Stan Pajak (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said, "We have a big influx of workers from Goa and the EU who live in the town centre.” … Swindon Council's cabinet member for children's services, Coun Garry Perkins, said: "Immigrants from Goa and the Philippines want their children to be educated in Catholic schools. Kenya: Murumbi legacy enigma of art

The Murumbi Gallery in Nairobi presents one of Africa’s most impressive artefacts collected from the 19th century … The gallery is named after Joseph Zuzarte Murumbi who was Kenya's second Vice-President from May 1965 to August 31, 1966 … Murumbi had left behind over 50,000 books and sheafs of official correspondence from which the Kenya National Archives department has set up a library containing some of the 8,000 "rare books" (published before 1900 or which are not reprinted). Rayney a suspect in wife's murder
22 Sep: The Royal Gazette (Bermuda). Lloyd Rayney is the prime suspect in his wife's murder according to Australian media reports. Forensic testing led police to believe Supreme Court Registrar Corryn Rayney was killed in the family home in Perth. Her body was later dumped, the West Australian newspaper has reported. Lloyd Rayney was not co-operating with Police. He is reported to have refused to allow detectives to question his two daughters … Police told the media that digging implements were recovered at the family home … Mrs. Rayney, 44, was originally from Goa, India, and was estranged from her husband but still living with him. 669 words. Motorists' fury as bus lane nets massive fines
25 Sep: Richmond & Twickenham Times. Shocked drivers have hit out at the company which owns the controversial bus lane in Hounslow after it was revealed it has scooped more than £100,000 in fines … Hounslow driver Anita D' Souza, said: "I am absolutely surprised, although we always knew it was a money-making scam.” …Mrs D'Souza maintained that, in spite of the fact that her fine, which rose to £125 after she refused to pay within two weeks, has been reduced to the original amount of £75, she will not pay up but will fight the matter in court if necessary. Law and order situation in Goa is normal
21 Sep. Navhind Times. The Governor, Mr S C Jamir today said that the law and order situation in the state is “normal and under control”. Amid protests, hotel shifts casino boat to Mandovi
21 Sep: Indian Express. In the wake of strong protests from the local residents, Hotel Leela Kempinski Goa has agreed to tow away its casino boat from the River Sal as early as possible. 21 Sep: PTI. Constant consumption of broiler chicken increases possibility of breast cancer amongst women, a study by Goa Medical College and Hospital said. "The study was done over the last five years and 571 women hailing from all strata of society and economic hierarchy were examined," Goa Medical College (GMC) Pathology department head Dr R G W Pinto said. The Essel Group's Risky Gamble

And now the company wants to try its hand at legalised gambling as well…The Essel Group recently bought a ship for Rs 15 crore and has applied for a licence to run a casino in international waters off the coast of Goa. The group is spending $12-15 million (Rs 48-60 crore) to re-fit it into a casino by January. Customers will be ferried to the ship on speed boats. Is it true that there is no freedom of religion for Muslims in Goa? This topic has generated much controversy on Goanet. Indeed, the issue is really about the extent of religious freedom available to minorities in India from earliest times. There is much historical evidence presented in the discussion on this theme

Do travel guides such as those produced by Lonely Planet do justice to places like Goa? Quite a controversy has arisen over this issue including whether the hawker depicted on a beach, on the front cover of a recent Lonely Planet edition is a recent migrant to Goa rather than a genuine Goan? Further, many errors within the text have been drawn to the attention of the publishers.

Finally, details have been received of a new book by Rochelle Pinto titled Between Empires: Print and Politics in Goa. A brief resume of the book states the following "Over the past decade, a number of studies have sought to re-think the history of literary cultures and linguistic identities in modern India, locating them in the wider context of print production, constitution of a reading public, and the interplay of different social groups. Between Empires offers the first systematic analysis of the relationships between print culture and colonial rule in Goa."
