Goanet Highlights by Cornel DaCosta
In an article titled '100 Goans to be trained for jobs in [the ] EU hospitality sector, Eduardo Faleiro, tells us that "City and Guilds, a leading examination and accreditation body in the UK for vocational and managerial training will provide the required training modules and certify the trainees to facilitate their employment in the European countries." However, I wonder whether this process will end up benefitting the EU countries much more than Goa and the Goans in Goa? I ask because the hospitality sector is known for being consistently short-staffed. The unsocial working hours tend to be long in a relatively poorly paid trade. It tends, on the whole, not to attract indigenous workers. So, let us now juxtapose this view with information widely disseminated in the UK media this week that: 2 million Britons have never worked in their lives and that 5 million have never worked under Labour---relying on benefits." Are our 100 Goans to be trained in the hospitality sector yet more fodder for Britain's and EU needs for relatively low level labour? Please see Goanet archives at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181583.html

But obviously, filling in vacant posts is also a problem in Goa as the article, '17 posts of panchayats secys (sic) vacant'. Read details of this situation and a brief response to the problem from the Director of Panchayat(s) Menino D'Souza at http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=25782&cid=26

Do read an informative article titled '500 Portuguese Churches of Bombay.' The author of the article is not named but the article appears under the rubric of East Indian News. Please see it at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181017.html

In an article titled 'Bailancho Saad demands Domestic Workers Act' by Sabina Martins, we learn about the urgency in Goa for action to introduce legislation for the benefit of domestic workers in the state of Goa. The organisation states that "while taking stock of the recent incident of torture and of several cases of exploitation and oppression of domestic workers, especially minors, and the unsatisfactory implementation of the Goa Children's Act, there is much urgency to address problems in this field.' Please see http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181032.html

In a short article, M. Goveia tells us in his own inimitable style 'Who is really running India'. His succinct piece under 12 headings illustrates the tremendous progress Kerala has supposedly made while "politicians to bureaucrats to developers are busy tearing Goa down." Finally, in a welcome light hearted mood, Mervyn Lobo's article ' American Medical Association votes on B. Husien Obama's proposed health care package' is likely to be a welcome antidote to many an ill. Please make it your reading must at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181203.html
