Goanet Highlights by Cornel DaCosta
Ivo da C. Souza provides an interesting discussion between himself and Mario Goveia on whether cancer is more curable than it has ever been before. The discussion between the these two gentlemen is whether "religious quackery" is being spread on Goanet or whether "Goanetters choose to be guided by providence". Please see http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182699.html

On the theme of 'Goans lived in misery under [the] Portuguese' Selma Carvalho does battle with J Colaco. A number of issues are drawn into this discussion and from other posts too and it is worth reading this at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182628.html

I have often claimed that the Christian Goans effectively lost their Goan identity when they chose largely to forsake their mother tongue Konkani (often portrayed as the language of the servant classes) in preference for colonial languages like Portuguese and English. However, it is worth noting that that herculean efforts are being made to re-instate Konkani to the pre-eminence it deserves and an article by Fausto DaCosta tells us that the "17th WKD was celebrated by GRAF in Association with [the] Konkani association, Mumbai, on 30th Aug 2009. Further, that the objective of this celebration was to highlight the significance of this day---the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Do read Cyril D'Souza's ' The Rise and Fall of a man consumed with a passion to be India s' (sic) PM. The article also represents a continuing discussion between Floriano Lobo, Cyril D' Souza and others. Please visit: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182613.html

In an article by Ashley D'Silva we learn that the two "structures of heritage value--the Old Municipal building and the ancestral house of Dr Francisco Luis Gomes--might have been virtually lying in ruins over the years...but if the plan mooted by the Margao Civic Body is anything to go by, these structures may be restored to their lost glory and preserved for posterity". Read more about this at http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182612.html

Do read about '7th World Goa Day 2009 with a twist in Melbourne' by Ashley D'Silva. The article spells out the depiction by Oscar C.Lobo, Co-ordinator of World Goa Day in Melbourne. Please visit: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182794.html

Finally, do read a fascinating account by Valmiki Faleiro referring to responses to the many articles he has written on Goan emigration and immigration and we have one illustration of a Goan prostitute doing her trade in remote Iceland.
