28 Jan: London, UK . ILDA FERNANDES. Aged 85. Ex Nairobi. Beloved wife of the late Piety Fernandes (1996). Loving mother of Vita, Santan/Anna, late Mila and Louis. Devoted granny to Paul, Steven, Anthony and Nichola. Sister to Crescencia, Catherine, Johnny, Appolonia and the late Anthony, late Rosario, late Albert. Arun Pereira: ‘If they thought they would cow me down, they were mistaken’
5 Feb: Mumbai Mirror. Mumbai-based Arun Ferreira, who was arrested in Nagpur in 2007 as a Naxalite, was acquitted in all nine cases against him in September 2011. But even as he walked out of Nagpur Central Jail, he was re-arrested in two more cases. In one of them, he was acquitted in three months. In January 2012, he was released on bail in the second, and last week, was finally acquitted… In jail, Arun completed a postgraduate diploma in human rights. Now he studies law, occasionally giving lectures at his alma mater, St Xavier's, and works to raise awareness about the violation of rights of political prisoners… 664 words + photo.  click here

Goan maid says she was robbed, beaten in Sharjah
4 Feb: Business Standard. A woman from Goa who was working as a maid in the United Arab Emirates has told police she was robbed and beaten with a leather belt for over two months by her Indian-origin employers there. The woman has registered a complaint at the Collem police station against Allan Rodrigues and his wife Ester on charges of abusing her for over two months in Sharjah in October-December last year… The woman filed the complaint soon after returning to India earlier this month.  click here

Church discovered in Brazil has Goan link

5 Feb: Times of India. The discovery of a church in Brazil that has a striking resemblance to the chapel of St Catherine in Old Goa, Goa, has perked some interest among members of the Goan cyber community active on the social media. Brazil's O Globo newspaper published a picture of the church that could easily be mistaken for the chapel in Goa. O Globo further states that the church was built in 1963 by Portuguese who had been expelled from Goa. "They (the Portuguese expelled from Goa) planned to build a city for 5,000 people around the church square, but gave up and returned to Europe," the report states…  click here

Body kept in GMC morgue decomposes
4 Feb: Herald. The family and relatives of Joyvin Pires of Merces, who died in a tragic accident, were robbed of bidding a proper farewell to their loved one as his body, which was kept in the recently opened state- of- the- art GMC morgue, got decomposed due to the its non-functioning… A grief stricken brother of the deceased, Mario, who had flown down from United Kingdom could not see the face of his brother for the last time due to the badly decomposed state of the body, a memory which is likely to haunt him for the rest of his life…  click here

The recent news that two MLAs of the Goa legislative assembly had registered their birth at the Civil Registration Office in Lisbon created a major controversy… many Goans seeking employment abroad found that a Portuguese passport would provide them easy access to the more affluent European countries. Mumbai: Cops say Bishop, Cardinal kept them waiting
4 Feb: DNA - Daily News & Analysis. Even as the Thane police allege they were kept waiting by the Archbishop and Cardinal, who were to come to Thane to give their version in the church land deal case, Bishop Agnelo Gracias maintains that nobody from his office will come as there is no formal complaint against them… He added, "We have done nothing wrong. We did sell the land and the charity commissioner has given us an injunction in the said case for a month." … It has been alleged that 21,000 sq metre of the 37,000 sq metre plot was sold to Hiranandani builders by the sole trustee Fr John Rumao to Hiranandani builders for Rs 20crore - way lesser than the market value of the land in 2007, i.e. Rs120 crore … 461 words.  click here
