Goa church may approach UNESCO against garbage plant

15 May: Business Standard. Goa's Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao will be roped in to join efforts to stop a garbage plant being set up near the Old Goa Church complex (photo), a world heritage site endorsed by UNESCO. Fr. Visitacao Monteiro, a parish priest from St. Andre village which is in close proximity to both the dump and the 16th century church complex, has said the Archbishop would be asked to write to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to stop the BJP-led coalition government from going ahead with its garbage dumping plan…  click here

LSD worth Rs.55 lakh seized in Anjuna from Nelly D’Souza, aged 55
15 May: Free Press Journal. The anti-narcotics cell here seized LSD worth Rs.55 lakh in the international market during a house search and arrested an elderly woman in this connection, a police spokesperson said Thursday. The official said Nelly D’Souza, 55, was arrested for possession of LSD found during a search in the beach village of Anjuna and known as a coastal hub for contraband drug peddling…  click here

Keep mancurad mango in Goa
15 May: Times of India. After a very long time the king of fruits, the mancurad mango, was within the reach of the common man in Goa this year. Goans have been able to relish the fruit to their heart's delight because of the low. The average sized mancurad mangoes were available for as low as Rs 200 a dozen… Is it because of a higher yield of the fruit or was Goa's favourite fruit not "exported" outside the state this year? …  click here

Goa’s top band to rock Muscat again

15 May: Times of Oman. Those familiar with the music scene in Goa know that music lovers of Muscat now have a chance to relish the performance of Goa’s number one band … A26 has become a musically empowered act since they started four years ago. They have played in every major city in India and have had a blast bringing the house down at every venue they have performed at. The dine and dance event will be held at the Civil Aviation Club, Seeb (Murjan Hall) on May 23, 2014 from 7pm onwards… The band is made up of versatile musicians and singers with the line-up including Alfin Fernandes on the keyboards, Marwino Dacosta on bass guitar, Grayston Vaz on lead guitar, Joe Pereira on drums, Abigail Vaz as the female vocalist and guitarist and band manager Lester Rodrigues…  click here

Indian rupee at 10-month high
15 May: Financial Express. The rupee appreciated by 22 paise to trade at almost 10-month high of 59.46 against the US dollar in early trade today [Thursday] at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on continued foreign capital inflows after exit polls projected NDA will form the next government at the Centre.  click here

Video: Mayem villagers meet Goa’s Governor
14 May: InGoaNews. Villagers from Mayem met the Governor Bharatvir Wanchoo and handed over a memorandum that he expedite the process to grant his assent to the bill passed recently by the Goa Legislative Assembly enabling grant of land ownership rights to locals in the Evacuee Property.
