Death: Jose Antao

24 Aug: Arrosim, Goa. JOSE BRAZ CLIFFORD ANTAO. Born 1962. Ex-Dar-es-Salaam. Son of late Claudio & Tschuchima Antao. Brother of Carol & Clovissa. Nephew of late Lorecine/late Anonette (Canada), late Filadelfo & late Aurora (Mapusa), late Engracia & late Ambrosio (Pileme). Cousin of Maxmilan/Vanessa, late Maxwel & Milton/Celine Antao, Peter/Luiza, Fr Maverick & Evelyn/Santos Fernandes. Mortal remains will be brought on 27-08-2014 to the residence at 1.00 p.m. to the pay the last respect. The funeral cortege will leave the residence at Arrosim, at 3.30 p.m., to St. Thomas Church, Cansaulim, followed by the Eucharistic celebration and burial

21 Aug: Toronto. JULIANA PHILOMENA FRANCIS (Born 1946; nee Lopes. Juliana was born and raised in India; she immigrated to Canada with her late husband Patrick. She will be missed by her loving children Wendy (Peter), Sandra (Rick), Sheldon, Debbie (Boris), Carlton and Audrey. Her grandchildren Ivanka, Crystal, Patrick and Klara also mourn the loss of a darling grandmother. Will Pope declare Bl Vaz a saint?

26 Aug: Herald. Stating that the process of canonization of Blessed Joseph Vaz had reached its zenith, Rector of Sancoale Sanctuary and Vice-Postulator (Goa) for the cause of canonization of Vaz, Fr Eremito Rebello made a plea for fervent prayers for his canonisation. The possibility of Blessed Vaz attaining sainthood soon assumes significance following the three-day visit of Pope Francis to Sri Lanka on January 13, 14 and 15 next year. Goa Tourism Development Corporation to upgrade infra, create high-end projects
25 Aug: Times of India. Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC) which has gone into overdrive during the last two years, has lined-up some high-end tourism projects. The GTDC which currently owns and runs 13 tourism residences at prime locations, some of which are not in very good shape, wants to raise tourism projects such as parks, expo-centers, marinas and high-end hotels. Real estate in Goa out of demand for now

25 Aug: Herald. Land brokers in the state are experiencing tough times due to the slowdown in the economy of the state. This is a comedown for a state which was considered a destination for rich residents of Mumbai and Delhi to buy a second home. Rich NRI’s or Goan residing in the Gulf and Europe used to also dream of buying a house here. The slowdown in those economies has not helped matters. For the brokers, the ban on mining in the state has hit them hard. When the mining operations were in progress it was not uncommon to have senior executives being recruited from outside the state. Impropriety plaint against Justice Bakre
26 Aug: Herald. A complaint has been filed with Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Mohit Shah against Justice U V Bakre for having heard a case pertaining to mining in Goa, when he cleared mining leases as Law Secretary. The complaint by Adv Aires Rodrigues pointed to improprieties since he was the Law Secretary of Goa from November 21, 2005 to April 8, 2007. Seattle: Cajetan Mendonca: Vittles restaurant

25 Aug: Business Journal (Seattle). Chefs Darlene Boline and Cajetan Mendonca (photo) are co-owners of Vittles, a new restaurant in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood. Her training is in French and Italian cooking. He learned to cook Portuguese food in his native Goa… Boline, an Italian-American from Pennsylvania and relative newcomer to Seattle, was running a popular but tiny sandwich spot, Zaccagni’s, at Pike Place Market. In the adjacent space was Saffron Spice, an Indian takeout stand owned by Mendonca, a native of Goa, who previously cooked at the Space Needle and Szmania in Kirkland… With his savings and financial help from a friend who works at Microsoft, Mendonca and Boline were able to buy the place. She did the redesign, he did most of the build-out, and they both did a lot of painting. After three months of work, Vittles opened Aug. 1.  click here

New Goa smartphone by Wiko for under 50 euros

24 Aug: Zone Numerique (France). On its official website, Wiko referred recently a new smartphone: the Goa. This new Android smartphone is expected to be popular because of its price, since the manufacturer expects to sell it for 49.99 euros! At this price it will obviously not be a high-end configuration. The Goa will have a small LCD TN 3.5" display, a touch screen that displays a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels …. The OS however will run on the latest version of Android: KitKat…  click here

Corrupt" leaders in Goa Congress want to oust me: Congress chief
"25 Aug: PTI. Announcing that a few more leaders will be suspended for working against the party's interest, Goa Congress President John Fernandes today claimed some "corrupt" elements were out to dislodge him from his post. Addressing a press conference here, Fernandes said there are "corrupt" people within the Congress who are using their ill-gotten money to target him. "But I will cleanse the party of corrupt leaders and those who want to have their family raj here," he asserted. The leaders will be suspended from the Congress by tomorrow, he said, two days after suspending former Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira for "anti-party" activities…  click here

Hindu outfit demands censor board for tiatrs in Goa
25 Aug: The Hindu. Sulking over a Konkani Tiatr (Konkani musical drama) which was critical of growing activities of rightwing Hindu outfits, Hindu Janajgruti Samiti (HJS), the rightwing Hindu outfit reiterated its demand with the government to establish a Censor Board for plays and tiatrs in Goa. A memorandum was submitted to Chief Minister of Goa on Monday by HJS demanding a Censor Board for plays and tiatrs ‘to preserve the communal harmony and maintain peace in Goa’… The HJS along with Sri Ram Sene unsuccessfully had tried to stop the maiden show of the play early this month through Court, accusing the play of demonising Sene chief Pramod Muthalik as “terrorist”…  click here
