9 Oct: Surrey Mirror. In the Surrey Open League Division Two, Old Reigatians II beat Goan 1-0. With some controversial decisions and frustration, the game could have turned either way. In the last minute Goan were able to get a cross into the D. Goans good at languages, but poor in maths: survey
9 Oct: Herald. The recently released findings of the national achievement survey by NCERT rated performance of students from Goa in language at 71 percent - significantly higher than the national average of 64 percent, but they disappoint in mathematics with 66% performance…  click here

Goa to have e-visa facility this month [but not from UK]

10 Oct: Mint (India). In a move to boost tourism, nine airports equipped with e-visa facilities will be operational for 13 countries including USA and South Korea and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to launch it this month… The authorisation facility would be operational at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Trivandrum and Kochi airports in the first phase and will be extended to other airports later… Besides tourists from USA and South Korea, visitors from all 11 countries which have been given visa on arrival facility are being covered under the e-visa scheme…  click here
Ed: There are no direct flights to Goa from the countries listed so the facility is hardly going to be used!

CBI team in UK to extradite Varley in Goa paedophilia case
10 Oct: Times of India. The CBI has sent a team to London to assist the legal authorities for extradition of Raymond Andrew Varley who allegedly molested hundreds of orphaned children in 1995 at a shelter home in Goa. The two-member team has reached London … After Varley's extradition was rejected by London's Westminster court, an appeal has been filed at the high court of England and Wales which will hear the case on Friday, source said… Even if the high court rules in CBI's favour, Varley will have a chance to appeal before the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales…  click here

Planet Hollywood lands in India; Goa resort to be ready by Dec

9 Oct: Business Standard. US-based theme restaurant Planet Hollywood has entered India with a beach resort in Goa which is being developed with a Rs 250-crore investment …. The Hollywood-inspired theme hotel, expected to be operational before Christmas, will be only the second in the world after Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas. It will be spread across 10 acres and will replicate the same style as its property in Las Vegas … It will be a 115-room and 15-luxury tent property located on the white sands of Uttorda Beach in South Goa…  click here

Mumbai: Will Christians vote good governance over secularism?
10 Oct: Times of India. This season, the Christian vote will be more fragmented than at any time in the community's history. Catholic and Protestant churches will urge parishioners at weekend mass to vote for "good governance" over "secular parties". Incidentally, good governance is the BJP's vote plank, while secularism is the Congress calling card … Some Catholic organizations have announced support for BJP and Shiv Sena candidates… A M Sodder, secretary of the Association of Concerned Catholics, says, "Corruption has flourished under the garb of secularism…We will choose good people, irrespective of party or community." … 447 words.  click here

Goa Arts & Literary Festival in trouble?

10 Oct: Times of India. Controversy surrounds the decision of the board of trustees of the International Centre Goa (ICG), Dona Paula, to deny a two-month extension sought by its director Nandini Sahai (photo) in view of the arts and literature festival, after first agreeing to do so… the term of its director Sahai was due to expire on October 12. But in view of the upcoming Goa Arts and Literary Festival, due to be held in December, an event that Sahai is intricately linked with, she had asked for the extension… This was granted with several conditions, she would have to raise funds for the festival on her own, that the budget would have to be limited to only 30 lakh, etc. … The board then reversed its earlier decision and said she could leave on October 12 itself. Questions are now being raised about the risk this poses to the conduct of the 5th edition of festival scheduled from December 4 to 7… 545 words.  click here

Dinesh D’Souza: Ebola panic is getting pretty racist
8 Oct: The Verge. … an ugly new hashtag has emerged: #Obola, a coinage that was popularized thanks to a tweet by conservative writer Dinesh D’Souza, and a Michael Savage radio segment. If you don’t get the reference, I don’t blame you. The President’s name doesn't exactly resemble "Ebola." But D’Souza, a known "birther," has somehow managed to liken a name like Obama with a disease that’s raging in Africa — not in the US. Predictably, this has given racist xenophobic Americans a banner to rally around …  click here
