News Summary

Book Review: Goa Travels- Being the accounts of travellers from the 16th to the 21st century

15 Feb: Daily News & Analysis. This beautifully produced anthology of travelogues on Goa edited by poet and writer Manohar Shetty is essential reading not just for the would-be visitor but also for the armchair anthropologist, says Selma Carvalho … When it was published in 1851, Goa and the Blue Mountains immediately courted controversy. Sir Richard Burton's inglorious tales of deceitful, treacherous black Christians with a fondness for drink and wife-beating, a race "decidedly the lowest in the scale of civilised humanity", was panned by reviewers…  click here

Emma Pinto: They killed my husband too soon

15 Feb: Sunday Nation (Kenya). Emma Dias arrived in Kenya from India in 1953. Her twin sister Joyce was already in Nairobi, married to Tome Mendonca… Her husband, Kenya’s independence hero Pio Gama Pinto, was arrested and detained by the British colonial government barely six months after their wedding in 1954. He was released five years later — but an assassin violently cut short the revived marital bliss in February 1965. Fifty years after the personal and national tragedy, Emma Gama, who lives in a nursing home in Ottawa, Canada, talks about how the death changed the course of her life and her feelings on Pinto’s killing as narrated by veteran journalist Cyprian Fernandes … 2827 words.  click here

Casimiro Monteiro: Sood (Feature Film, 2004)

The entry in Goan Voice yesterday regarding Portuguese secret service agent Casimiro Monteiro has prompted a reader to point out that that there is a Konkani film, entitled Sood, made in 2004, based on his life. It was scripted by Damodar Mauzo and based on his novella of the same title but does not appear to have been officially released. However, it was shown at the London Film Festival and for the British Film Institute’s description of the movie,  click here

Lisbon: Lunch With ... Jorge Barreto Xavier

14 Feb: Diario de Noticias. We are at the buffet of Hotel Tivoli … I prefer papaya, Jorge Barreto Xavier says. "Did you know that Goa has fourteen varieties of mango?" Goa is where the Secretary of State for Culture was born in 1965 and lived up to the age of 5. He talked a bit about Goa and of numerous Catholic Brahmin families who value faith and education that makes them today "what they are” … The first part of the conversation is informal and relaxed. It is only when I turn on the recorder on that he speaks with great caution …  click here

The Rising Slums of Goa

13 Feb: Goa Streets. Are there slums in Goa? Many Goans, when asked this question, reply instinctively, “No, there aren’t”… Karaswada in Mapusa has had one of Goa’s largest concentrations of slum dwellers for several years now. But ‘mini-slums’ have been springing up all over Goa at construction sites… Children walking Tall/Mango Tree is one non-profit organisation, amongst many others, that provides food and makes up for hundreds of inadequacies, both small and large, in the lives of Goa’s slum children. Started by a software developer from England who has settled in Goa and dedicated his life to this cause, the organisation makes a world of a difference to the slum dwellers. You can read more about it at www.mangotreegoa.org … If Goa is to truly live up to its status as India’s richest state, it’s not just about having the highest per capita GDP. It’s also about treating every human being with the dignity they deserve… 1646 words.  click here

The Garbage of Goa

13 Feb: Goa Streets. To understand the gravity of Goa’s garbage problem, it’s necessary to avert one’s gaze outside the state – to all the places on the planet where there are NO piles of trash lining the roads, where drivers and bus passengers do NOT toss their litter out of the window, where once pristine countryside has NOT been transformed into a massive waste bin. And now imagine yourself as a potential visitor trying to figure out where best to spend your hard-earned holiday. Do you choose a place like the ones described above, which are the world’s norm anyway, or do you choose the one major beach destination that’s allowed itself to become an unsightly rubbish dump? …  click here

Goa’s pork sausages have much in common with the chorizos of Spain + recipe

14 Feb: Hindustan Times. By Vir Sanghvi. What exactly is chorizo? It is a name given to two entirely different kinds of spiced pork sausages from the Iberian Peninsula. There are chorizo sausages, fiery red torpedoes that burst with flavour when you fry them. And there’s the large sausage, which you slice like salami and serve cold … The Portuguese often use vinegar. And so, when they took their chorizo to their colonies, it was the vinegary version that travelled with them… (Recipe from the mother of Julia Desa, chef-owner, Tres – photo in Goan Voice 13 Feb, 2015) …  click here

Goa Tourism targeting beach shacks

14 Feb: EconomyLead. The social wing of the influential Roman Catholic Church in Goa has accused the state government of corporatising tourism spaces like beach shacks and taxi services while pushing resident entrepreneurs out of business. Beach shacks, the temporary thatched eateries, are licenced annually by the tourism ministry. They are synonymous with Goa’s beaches and enormously popular with the hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting the state every year. Father Maverick Fernandes, of tourism watchdog NGO Centre for Responsible Tourism(CRT) under the Church’s aegis, said the recent demolition of shacks at the Utorda-Majorda beach belt was aimed “to benefit five-star resorts”…  click here

Xit has all but disappeared, ---- will the kodi dry up now?

13 Feb: The Goan. For lunch especially, XitKodi (literally translates to Rice and Curry) means a meal with fish. Take fish away from a Goan and he will lose a bit of himself. In this scenario, it would seem that the men who bring in the fresh catches every day would be lauded and treated with respect. The truth is quite far from it, really… there is an air of discontent among the ramponkars and others related to the fishing industry… 2909 words.  click here
