Aires Rodrigues: Mickky Pacheco faces six-month jail term

31 Mar: Times of India. In a major setback to Goa's rural development agency (RDA) Minister Francisco 'Mickky' Pacheco, the Supreme Court has dismissed his petition challenging the order of the high court of Bombay at Goa for allegedly assaulting a junior engineer (JE) of the electricity department in 2006… Margao additional sessions court Judge Vijaya Pol on December 13, 2012, convicted Pacheco for causing the JE simple hurt, but released him on an admonition by granting him benefit under Probation of Offenders Act. Canada: Richard Pereira, 36, charged in Brampton homicide

29 Mar: CBC (Canada). A woman's body was removed from a Nanwood Drive home in Brampton, Ont., on Sunday afternoon… Richard Pereira, 36, has been charged with second-degree murder.  click here

Police have identified the victim as Kathryn Horne, a 58-year-old woman from Toronto … Pereira’s mother voluntarily came forward to investigators as a witness… Neighbours described Pereira as friendly, but said he often talked of being followed and of his acute fear that his mother would be kidnapped… One resident recalled a conversation he had with Pereira’s mother, in which she called her son extremely disturbed…  click here

India moves to speed up adoption

30 Mar: The Guardian. New child welfare minister pledges to improve ‘shameful’ record on adoption – with more than 30 million orphans estimated in country ... Prospective parents in India are stymied by complicated rules… India also wants to limit foreign adoptions to less than 20% of the total.… The number of adoptions by foreigners fell from 628 to 271 in the past four years because the government’s priority is to find Indian parents first. India also wants to limit foreign adoptions to less than 20% of the total. Earlier last month, a parliament panel killed a government proposal to boost foreign adoption, saying that option must be explored only when there is a problem finding suitable parents within India…  click here

Goa mulling special software to track illegal sex tests
30 Mar: IANS. The administration in Goa is mulling installing special software to keep record of every ultrasound machine in Goa, an official said on Monday, following the recent crackdown on errant ultrasound clinics in South Goa district. The move comes at a time when Goa, despite healthy social indicators, has been aggressively trying to better its sex ratio, which has seen a dip in recent times… Goa has a sex ratio of 968 females per 1,000 males…  click here

30 Mar: Salt Lake Tribune (USA). Located along India's west coast, the state of Goa is virtually synonymous, from a culinary standpoint, with vindaloo.
