Obituary

Death: Oscar Mascarenhas

6 May: Lisbon. TVI 24 (Portugal). The journalist Oscar Mascarenhas died Wednesday, at 65, of a heart attack. The news was broken by “Diário de Notícias” where he was a journalist and ombudsman… Oscar Mascarenhas was born on December 9, 1949, in Goa. He began his career in 1975 at the now defunct newspaper "A Capital" and passed the “Página Um”, the "Jornal do Fundão", "Lusa" and the DN… The general secretary of the PS, António Costa, conveyed condolences on behalf of the party and the death of Oscar Mascarenhas and said he was a journalist regarded and respected for decades. The funeral will take place at 11:00 am Friday at the S. João de Deus Church, Praça de Londres, Lisbon, and the body subsequently cremated at the cemetery of Alto de S. Mississauga man puzzled after receiving unsolicited PC membership card

6 May: Toronto Star. John Nazareth is puzzled and annoyed at getting a Progressive Conservative membership card in the mail, entitling him to vote for the party’s next leader. It arrived in mid-April, while he was on a trip to India, two months after attending a South Asian “young professionals workshop” where Barrie MP Patrick Brown was the only candidate touting his leadership bid. “I’m not a member of the PC Party. It looks wrong,” Nazareth said … It was Feb. 21 when Nazareth, who is of Goan descent, attended a “why politics matter” session at the Toronto Airport Hilton Garden Inn. “It wasn’t just an event for PCs, although (Brown) was the main speaker.” … He maintains he did not sign a membership application or pay the required $10 fee for one. Vernon Mascarenhas: Anyone for a bowl of bubbleberries? This summer's craziest fruits

6 May: Daily Telegraph (UK). Move over, strawberries and mangoes. This year, the fruit bowl will be stuffed with some rather unusual specimens … Vernon Mascarenhas, fruit and veg expert and produce adviser to the UK’s top chefs and restaurants, agrees the best fruits are often only available at farmers markets or direct from producers. “Loganberries are the perfect example,” Vernon says… Plango: M&S recently launched the Mango Plum – or the plango as it was inevitably dubbed – a plum that has been crossed with a mango. The fruit has a bright orange edible skin and flesh similar in taste to the sublime Alphonso mango, but with the softer texture and smaller size of a plum. Sheffield barrister to go on trial today charged with sexually assaulting teenage girl

6 May: The Star (Sheffield, UK). A Sheffield barrister is due to go on trial today accused of sexual assault. Desmond Rosario, aged 46, of Abotts Wood, Heaton, Bradford, is due to stand trial today at Leicester Crown Court accused of sexually assaulting a girl under 16 years old. The offence is alleged to have occurred in Sheffield in October 2013. The trial is expected to last a week.  click here

6 May: Getting into the skin of a character isn’t a cakewalk, as you will see in this video on the making of Anushka Sharma’s character Rosie Noronha in Bombay Velvet. As director Anurag Kashyap explains, Rosie is a girl from Goa. She has suffered abuse. She is in Bombay not to make a name for herself, but to simply eke out a living. Anushka Sharma was required the get the character’s mannerisms, look and lingo right. More than anything, since Rosie is a jazz singer, Anushka had to learn how to lip-sync to jazz numbers. Shipwrecks off India’s coast may finally get rescued from underwater pirates

6 May: Scroll. Shipwrecks off Goa’s coastline that have been looted by plunderers and underwater pirates for long may escape further pillage thanks to a French offer to scientifically excavate and exploit them. French ambassador Francois Richier, who was in Goa on Saturday, told Scroll.in that there could be many underwater riches off the Indian coast that could be unearthed with bilateral cooperation between India and France in the field of marine archaeology. The collaboration may well also help India learn more about its maritime heritage… Historical records show that between the years 1497 and 1612, over 800 ships sailed from Lisbon in Portugal for the India Peninsula. Twenty of these reportedly ran aground, 66 were shipwrecked, four were captured by rival navies, while six were torched mid-sea during maritime conflict…  click here

6 May: The Guardian (UK). …this collection by Indian classical vocalist Kesarbai Kerkar had to go straight in… Recorded 80 years ago in Bombay, these songs were originally released by Broadcast … Inspired – and licensed – by early record-business pioneers Vocalion, Kerkar’s songs, like those of her labelmates Siddheswari Devi and Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar, were pressed on to shellac and released in 12in, 10in, 9in and 8in formats…Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar was born in 1892 in the village of Keri near Panaji in Goa into a “kalawant” or skilled family of musicians…Appropriately, Kerkar’s Jaat Kahan Ho (Where Are You Going?) was included on the Voyager spacecraft’s Golden Record in 1977…  click here

Goa to add casinos, move gambling ships upriver
6 May: Business Standard. The five glitzy offshore casinos anchored in the Mandovi river, which are now contemporary landmarks in the state's capital, will be shifted upriver to other locations, even as an anti-corruption outfit claimed that five more casinos could soon be given operating licences. Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of a tourism ministry event here, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, whose Bharatiya Janata Party had vouched to rid Goa of casinos as a pre-poll promise, dodged questions over whether his government would grant licences to more casinos, in addition to the dozen-odd gambling facilities already functioning in the state's five-star hotels…  click here

Opposition builds up against marinas in Goa

Acclaimed director of Malayalam cinema Adoor Gopalakrishnan's social drama is set in Kerala, southern India, between the 1940s and 1960s. The film portrays the lives of four women from very different social backgrounds, who each face a marital issue: the prostitute, the virgin, the housewife and the spinster. The film won Gopalakrishnan the Best Director award at India's National Film Awards in 2007 and is based on four short stories by the towering writer of Malayalam literature, TS Pillai. This film concludes Channel 4's first Indian Film Season of 2015.
