Eat Dust! Mining and greed in Goa

13 Nov: The Citizen. Eat Dust, Mining and Greed in Goa written by writer, actor Hartman De Souza (photo) has recently been published by Harper Litmus. The Citizen is pleased to carry an excerpt from the book as below … “I began making notes for this chronicle as far back as 2006, wondering what mining would do to entire landscapes that I had cherished for years. I had long lost faith that the feeble opposition to mining in Goa would bear any kind of fruit. I saw this chronicle as a factual blow-by-blow account of what actually happened on the ground – left behind like photographs in monochrome and sepia. Only when there was nothing left here, except the pockmarked ravages of open-cast mining, would everybody know how this part of Goa had been upended in a frenzy fuelled by greed… 2681 words.  click here

Spain: Goa celebrates its 'faults'

13 Nov: La Vanguardia (Spain). For a month, young Hindu Goans have met all evening to celebrate their Narkasur idols the tyrannical demigod vanquished by Krishna and his consort Satyabhama. Something awful as hundreds of monsters ended up burnt on Tuesday at dawn… Although the Narkasur idols is the indispensable figure, there is no shortage - pale skin, blue eyes and bobs dreadlocks – idols suspiciously similar to the foreigners that fifty years come to the beaches of Anjuna … But in the Goan context, where there is almost always a white Church on the horizon, the Hindu celebrations have a vaguely Latin character: bonfires, rockets and firecrackers - and liquor of coconut or cashew - in towns with names such as Salvador do Mundo … 668 words.
