Death: Delfina Fernandes (nee Rego)

14 Apr: Plaistow, London, UK. DELFINA FERNANDES (nee Rego), formerly of Nairobi, aged 97. Passed away, peacefully. Beloved wife of the late Manuel Fernandes and loving mother of: Ernestine, Melita/Casmiro, Martha/Brendan, Clara/Danny, Micheal/Vivienne, Ursula/Leo and the late Agnelo. She will also be greatly missed by her 11 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren. The Funeral Mass will be held at St Anthony's Church, Forest Gate, London E7 9QB at 11am on the 10th of May 2016. Followed by burial at City of London Cemetery in Manor Park, London E12 5DQ after which Refreshments and Lunch will served at Wanstead Sports Club, Blake Hall Road, London E11 2QW to which all are invited. A Coach will be available at the Church for those who require transport to the cemetery and Hall. Social worker Sister Mary Jane passes away

20 Apr: India.com. Sister Mary Jane, who has been working in the field of prisoner reform in Goa, passed away today. She was 75. Sr Jane breathed her last at her residence in Navelim village, near Margao city, Fr Maverick Fernandes, Director, Caritas Goa said. Sr Jane was coordinator of prison ministry of Caritas, a wing of Goa Church, and has been working with prisoners in erstwhile Aguada jail, Colvale … Born in Kenya in 1941, Sr Jane had settled at Saligao in Goa since she was six year old …  For further details click here

Cops bust prostitution racket; rescue 4 girls, arrest woman in Calangute

21 Apr: Navhind Times. Busting a prostitution racket that operated online, Crime Branch police rescued four victim girls and arrested a woman in a raid near a hotel in Calangute during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The four girls, who have been rescued, are from Chandigarh, Punjab, Thane-Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Based on a tip off, a trap was laid and the accused was caught red-handed when she had come to deliver the girls to a decoy customer, police said. The woman accused has been identified as Tanya Sharma who resides at Nagoa…  click here

P K Mishra made Goa Lokayukta

21 Apr: Indian Express. The Goa government Wednesday appointed Justice P K Mishra, former judge at Patna High Court, as the state Lokayukta (Ombudsman). The post had been lying vacant since October 2013 when Justice Sudarshan Reddy resigned, barely seven months after taking up the job, citing personal reasons. Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that 12 cases are pending with the Lokayukta.  click here

Goa govt brings monkey hunters to mainstream

20 Apr: The Goa government, along with a few social outfits, is now trying to bring a nomadic tribe, whose traditional occupation is basically hunting and eating monkeys, into the mainstream society. "It's not an easy project. These people of 'Wanar-mare' (literally, monkey-hunters) tribe who have no fixed address do not even enjoy the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and, therefore, do not get any resultant benefits. They have been wandering in the forests all these years without possessing a single government document. We have started an effort to bring them into the mainstream," said collector of South Goa district, Sachin Shinde  click here

Mercedes sales in Goa zoom 60% in 2015-16

20 Apr: Navhind Times. Luxury car Mercedes Benz sales in Goa grew fastest among all other states in India during 2015-16, said Aakash Khaunte, managing director, Counto Motors. Mining closure slowed down the local economy but the emergence of new buyers made demand for luxury cars grow in Goa… The Goa centre was the best performing among all dealerships in the country and strong sales was on the heels of an equally good 2014-15 when sales grew 52 per cent…  click here
