Obituary

Death: Dominic Mascarenhas

18 Apr: London. DOMINIC FRANCIS XAVIER MASCARENHAS (ex-Bombay and Nairobi). Loving husband of Eliza (Hazilda), devoted father of Joseph (Antje), Kalleen (Carlos) and Ruby (Ricardo). Loving grandfather to Darryl, Shaun, Ryan, Rebecca and Rachel. Son of the late Jose and late Feliciana Mascarenhas, Mungul, Goa. Brother to the late Minguelina, late Felix and late Franklin. Uncle to Alex, Pauline (Simon), Norbert (Appy) and Anita (Errol).
Funeral service will be held on Friday, 6 May 2016 at St John the Evangelist Church, 59 The Avenue, Tadworth, Surrey, KT20 5DB at 11am followed by the burial at Epsom Cemetery, KT18 5BP at 12.30pm and a Wake at around 1.30 pm at Parish Church Hall, Church Rd, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 8BD. Parking at the hall is very limited but local car parks are available. There will also be a coach service arranged from the Church to the Cemetery, then to the Wake and leaves for Tadworth Station at around 4.30pm. Death: Pascoal Denis
25 Apr: Nairobi. PASCOAL AMOS SEBASTIAN ALMEIDA DENIS. Born 1933. Loving husband of the late May Ana Denis. Loving brother of Jose Denis, Efigenia Denis, Fernando Diniz, the late Beatrice Drury and the late Aninha Denis.
Pascoal made a significant contribution to the Roman Catholic Church, the Goan community, the Charity sector, the professional education of accountants in Kenya and to Government social policy implementation after Kenya's Independence. He was the National Chairman of the St Vincent de Paul Society. Pascoal held positions at the National Treasury and was Accountant General, Kenya Government, 1970-1979. In 2007, the President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki awarded Pascoal the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.). Pascoal was also given the title Knights of The Order of Saint John of Jerusalem by the Pope. For funeral details watch this space. Indian Catholic bishop attacked, beaten

29 Apr: Vatican Radio. India’s minority Christian community has come under attack again, and this time it is a Catholic bishop who is the victim. Matters India news website on Thursday quoted the Federation of Telugu Churches (FTC), saying Bishop Prasad Gallela of Cuddapah was attacked by unidentified persons when he was returning from a religious function … The incident took place on April 25 but was made public only on Thursday …  click here

Egyptian cleric defends CIA agent convicted over his rendition

29 Apr: The Guardian (UK). The radical Egyptian cleric who was kidnapped in Milan by the CIA in 2003 has come to the defence of a former CIA officer convicted for her alleged role in his extraordinary rendition. Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, who is known as Abu Omar (photo), told the Guardian in a telephone interview that he believed Sabrina De Sousa, who faces imminent extradition to Italy, was a scapegoat and ought to be pardoned by Italy’s head of state. De Sousa, a 60-year-old dual American and Portuguese citizen, faces a four-year prison sentence and is due to be extradited from Portugal on 4 May… De Sousa said in response to the Abu Omar comments that she appreciated his remarks about her family… 1346 words.  click here

Russian national alleges rape by guest-house owner in Goa

29 Apr: Daily News and Analysis. A 25-year-old Russian woman has allegedly been raped by the owner of a guest-house where she was staying, Pernem police said on Friday. The incident took place on Thursday morning when the girl was asleep in her room, Inspector Sanjay Dalvi said. The accused has been identified as James D'Souza, owner of Morjim Club guest house, and has gone missing after the complaint was filed. "Medical examination of the woman has confirmed rape," Dalvi said…  click here

Christians most affected with English as Medium Of Instruction

29 Apr: Navhind Times. By remaining aloof of the Konkani language as medium of instruction (MoI) and promoting English as MoI at primary level of education, the most affected will be the Christian community, stated Fr Mousinho Athaide (photo by Frederick Noronha). Addressing the media, Fr Athaide, who is a member of Bhartiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) and the Christian face of the anti-English movement, said “The most affected by English language will be the Christians and the biggest damage will be done to the Christian community as they will be left aloof from the culture of Goa.”  click here

Fish prices see steep hike
