Goans in UK have little to fear post-Brexit

Goans who have opted for Portuguese passport and have surrendered their Indian citizenship could enjoy dual benefits without obtaining dual citizenship due the OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card. The only restrictions imposed on OCI card holders are that they cannot contest or cast a vote to elections and cannot take up a government job… click here

The EU response to Brexit was quick, laconic, determined and even unusually democratic… Coming down to the Goans in UK, their participation in Brexit may deserve a study. A quick glance at the Facebook presents a wide spectrum of wild as well as wise comments… I was surprised by a few comments from longtime Goan settlers in UK. Some assume a self- confident and patronizing pose, stating that no harm will come from Brexit to any Goans, others pick on the Goans settled in Swindon, who voted for Brexit to keep new potential Goan arrivals out… I am thinking also about many Goans who have acquired property in South Portugal to make the best of their meager pensions in UK … 949 words click here

Goans continue to queue for Portuguese passports

Braving the monsoon, fighting off sleep and largely unperturbed by Britain's decision to exit the European Union (EU) three days ago, Goans continued to queue up outside the Portuguese consulate at Altinho early Monday morning. William D'Souza (name changed) reached the consulate at 2am, only to find 15 people already waiting … Working hours at the consulate begin at 9am. D'Souza was permitted inside the compound at 9.30am. He could enter the building an hour later … When asked about the risks of going to the UK post Brexit, he shrugs it off. "Nothing will happen. If we face a problem, there's always France, Germany and other countries. Otherwise we'll come back home," he says confidently … click here

Portugal to its citizens in UK: Get permanent residence cards
28 Jun: Times of India. Portugal's secretary of state for communities Jose Luis Carneiro has advised Portuguese nationals, including those of Goan origin in the UK to obtain a permanent residence card and also seek dual nationality to ensure that all their rights are protected … "The Portuguese who have any questions should use the consular services," he advised, assuring them that in the coming weeks the Portuguese government would strengthen the Consulate General in London by sending a deputy consul-general and additional staff to cater to the emigrants. Jayson Lobo: UK police officer and Commonwealth Games runner accused of voyeurism
28 Jun: Lancashire Telegraph (UK). PC Jayson Lobo, 46, a serving police officer and former Commonwealth Games middle distance runner is set to appear in court accused of voyeurism. He is accused of 17 offences of voyeurism which were allegedly committed against eight women. He will appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday to answer the charges… Lobo is a former Commonwealth Games middle distance runner… Lobo was last in the headlines in 2007 when he settled a racial discrimination suit with Lancashire Police out of court.
