Portugal's Guterres is new U.N. chief [his wife is a Goan]

6 Oct: Reuters. The United Nations Security Council on Thursday unanimously nominated former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres to be the next Secretary-General, recommending that the 193-member General Assembly appoint him for five years from Jan. 1, 2017. The General Assembly is likely to meet next week to approve the appointment of Guterres, 67, who would replace Ban Ki-moon, 72, of South Korea. Ban will step down at the end of 2016 after serving two terms… Guterres was prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015…  click here

In fact that is where a majority of Africans, involved in a riot like situation on NH 17 in Porvorim, after the murder of one of their compatriots, spent their time but now they flock to Simba restaurant in Baga. There are no hoardings or any signs, but the Africans know it well and it is here that they meet and many believe, strike their deals. No one other than the Africans visit this restaurant… “No Indians are allowed. I mean no one goes there because all ‘khapris’ (Africans) visit that place, you will not even find an Indian dish in the restaurant but all African dishes are served there,” one of the local bar owners at the tinto told Herald…  click here

Kenya: Former VP sheds light on Sh8b Karen land deal

6 Oct: The Standard (Kenya). Former Vice President Moody Awori says he oversaw the purchase of the controversial Sh8 billion Karen land 33 years ago. In documents filed in court, Mr Awori said he was a director of Muchanga Limited when the land was transferred from Barclays Bank… The former VP filed his affidavit last Friday to support claims by businessman Horatius Da Gama Rose, now deceased, that he purchased the land from Barclays in 1983.
