News Summary

The curious birth of the Hindu-American. By Selma Carvalho

12 Nov: The Goan. It was Muslim-Indians who first crossed the seas as traders and lascars, and it was Christian-Indians who followed suit as seamen, clerks, doctors and priests. Hindus were paralysed with fear at the thought of crossing the kala-pani, until the agricultural community settled in parts of Africa encouraged by the British to cultivate arable land. Later, the possibility of a stellar education lured caste Hindus to Britain even if it meant the humiliation of purification ceremonies upon their return … Those early Indian migrants to the west – whether Muslim, Hindu or Christian – all suffered the same racial slurs spat out at them. It is repugnant now, to sculpt a Hindu-American identity which hopes to dilute what little solidarity exists on account of race. 871 words.  click here

The 'Trump card' in Goan politics that saw BJP in power. By Vivek Menezes

12 Nov: Times of India. … The US results clearly echo the UK's stunning vote earlier this year for "Brexit", to withdraw from the European Union… Narendra Modi's prodigious sweep of the 2014 general election in India also signposted the international trend that climaxed with Trump's victory. Much like the new American president, Modi battled conventional wisdom and the leadership of his own party before he became accepted as a viable candidate… The Indian and American also both ran as strongmen, who could clean up the status quo, bringing great things to the common citizen… Both men derive political strength from angry voters, a "silent majority" that feels left out and discriminated against by an unjust world economic order…  click here

Using the lack of computerization to their advantage, these shop owners have also begun registering their current sales under previous records… Some hoteliers, however, were reported to be co-operating with guests and accepting notes of 500 and 1,000…  click here

Rev Dr Canon Jules Gomes’s ‘Vilification of diocesan bishop completely unjustified,’ says Archbishop Sentamu

11 Nov: Isle of Man Examiner (UK). Rev Dr Canon Jules Gomes’s conduct was ‘unbecoming or inappropriate’ to the office and work of the clergy, a Bishop’s Disciplinary Tribunal found last month following a three-day hearing. Editorial: Goa’s shack owners need our attention, affection and protection

13 Nov: Herald. … The government and those managing tourism, do not take shack management and shack welfare as a priority. Shack owners should be treated not just with kid gloves but recognised as Goa’s finest tourism ambassadors. The single point objective should have been to start all shack operations by October 1 and everything should have been geared towards that… From the number of applications, it is so very clear that shacks are the backbone of Goa’s coastal economy… The government and those who manage Goa’s tourism must see tourism as a primary livelihood, which can put more food on the table in many Goan homes …  click here
