In a dramatic development, Vikram Varma today insisted that prime suspect Vikat Bhagat could not have acted alone… ‘I believe Danielle’s attackers took her to another place other than the place where the body was found”. Editorial: Making Tourists feel safe in Goa

20 Mar: Navhind Times. The rape and murder of the 28-year-old Irish woman Danielle McLaughlin highlights once again the issue of lack of safety of tourists across Goa. According to police records, as many as 260 foreign tourists died of 'unnatural causes' in the state between 2005 and 2015. Among them were 76 British nationals, including 18 women, 48 Russians, 18 Nepalese, 13 Ukrainians and 5 Germans… The two accused in the Scarlet case were acquitted by the children's court for lack of evidence despite the Central Bureau of Investigation handling it, causing disbelief and disappointment among members of her family and foreign tourists at large… Goa attracts tourists from different states of India and foreign countries and it is the duty of the state administration to ensure their safety…  click here

Mumbai: Anne Crasto deported 13 years after she flew to Canada on fake passport

20 Mar: Indian Express. Anne Flavia Crasto from Mangalore was deported to India on Friday, 13 years after she travelled to Canada using a fake passport… According to the police, in September 2004, Crasto, now 52 years old, used a passport registered in another person’s name to travel to Montreal via Mumbai. While the forgery was not detected in India, she was held by immigration authorities at the airport in Montreal. Immediately, she applied to be granted asylum, but her request was rejected. Over the next decade however, Crasto continued to live in Montreal, working as a house help and sending money to her family in Mangalore. She got married to an Indian-origin American citizen in Canada. But they got divorced in 2012 … Crasto, comes from a very poor family in Mangalore, of which no member has been able to come to Mumbai to be with her… Crasto was not very well educated and must have been duped by her agent …  click here

Canada: Road to priesthood started with a simple question

9 Mar. 2012: The Catholic Register. Brothers Ryan and Favin Alemao are in formation for the priesthood at Toronto’s St. Augustine’s Seminary. And though both come from the same family, have had similar experiences and look incredibly alike — some even mistake them for twins — both reached the same point in very different ways. Man, 72, charged with stabbing Indian Catholic priest in Melbourne

20 Mar: Daily Mail. A priest was stabbed in the neck in front of horrified worshipers during a Sunday morning church service in Melbourne. Reverend Tomy Kalathoor Mathew, 48, was just about to start the 11am Italian mass at St Matthew’s church in Fawkner North when a man approached him. The man allegedly yelled 'you are Indian, a Hindu or Muslim, you cannot say mass... I will kill you.' … Later on Sunday evening, a 72-year-old man was arrested in connection with the stabbing, police announced around 9pm. Rev Mathew was not seriously injured in the brazen attack but was rushed to hospital after his flock gave him first aid inside the church…  click here

India to emerge as new hub for cruises

20 Mar: Travel Biz Monitor. According to a report in The Asian Age, a policy is in the works to make India a global destination for cruise shipping and efforts are on to identify such circuits … Europe’s key player Costa Cruises launched Costa neo Classica in India recently, which has confirmed seven voyages. A task force to promote cruise tourism in the country has been constituted under the chairmanship of tourism secretary, with shipping secretary as co-chairman… Of the 12 major ports, only five — Mumbai, Goa, Cochin, New Mangalore and Chennai — have facilities to berth international cruise ships …  click here
