London-based Goan origin Marietta shines at an international music festival

10 Aug: Navhind Times. London-based Marietta de Almeida, a violinist who led the Sutton Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) recently performed a solo (‘‘Coimbra’’) at the International Youth Lisbon Music Festival 2017 which was held in and around Lisbon, Portugal. Marietta traces her roots to the village of Assagao. She has attended one of the best state schools in Sutton, south west - Nonsuch High School. At school, she performed Mozart’’s violin Concerto No 3 with the school’s symphony orchestra and even led the orchestra in her final year of school. She also did solos in piano and violin at school events… Her mother introduced her to Konkani and Portuguese music. She has played all these genres at various events, including an event last year in London, where MP Keith Vaz was the honorary guest … 502 words. A Russian patient describes his treatment at Galaxy hospital, Goa

By Vadim Karpov (photo). “I fell off a motorcycle in Goa and broke a leg … An ambulance took me to the private Galaxy hospital in Mapusa… Snow-white sheets, bright spot lights. stall mostly fragile dark-skinned girls in white coats… Dr. Kolvalkar, head and chief surgeon of the hospital examined my leg and quickly straightened it … wonderful Asian medicine! … The ward is separate, large, bright… The cleaner appeared every ten minutes… The food was arranged and it was worth terribly cheap - two hundred rupees for dinner and supper… The operating theatre was very modern. It's like a movie… I was discharged on the third day and worth the thousand with dollars ... But two months later my leg got swollen and I had to be admitted to hospital in Nice, France. 17th century Georgian queen’s remains from Goa to be exhibited in homeland

10 Aug: Agenda (Tbilisi) Sacred remains of a medieval Georgian regent tortured in Persia for her faith will be returned to the country for exhibitions and pilgrimage after successful conclusion of talks between cultural agencies of Georgia and India this week. Remains of the 17th century Queen Ketevan will go on display at museum and religious venues and will be on public view for history enthusiasts and the faithful for six months… Some of her remains ended up in a Church of St. Augustine in Goa as well as in Vatican and Belgium.  click here

Goa chefs attempt Guinness record for largest fish patty

10 Aug: Times of India. Forty culinary professionals attempted to bag the Guinness World record for the world's largest fish patty … "On completion, the fish patty weighed 296.5kg with a diameter of 122cm and height of 29cm," said Joseph Dias, chairman, Trinity Group … This has been submitted to the Guinness authorities in UK, along with photos, videos, and certificates. Guinness is expected to declare the winner officially within 12 weeks…  click here
