Fr. Raymond de Souza: The agonizing betrayal of priests who abuse

10 Sep: National Post (Canada). Allegations of predatory behaviour against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the ex-archbishop of Washington, comes as a shock after his key role in the reforms implemented by American bishops, writes Raymond de Souza (photo). The Catholic world has been embroiled this summer in a series of sexual abuse scandals, both historic and contemporary, in America and abroad. The news, even if it doesn’t involve new developments in Canada, reopens old wounds for victims — or pours salt in wounds that have never fully healed. Many faithful parishioners are also hurt, embarrassed and irate…  click here

Goa CM Parrikar’s Ill Health Contentious Issue for BJP

10 Sep: The Citizen. By Pamela D’Mello. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar rushed back from a US hospital on September 6, after challenges to his leadership reportedly surfaced from within his party. The CM has had frequent and long spells in hospitals in Goa, Mumbai and the USA, since he first took ill in February… Far more damaging than the opposition's complaints of a "headless" government are digs from ruling alliance members on the slow pace of administrative work. Statements from cabinet colleagues indicate a growing restlessness as manifested in the political moves that unfolded during the CM's last US visit… Plainly the BJP has a problem on its hands in Goa. Two other ministers are seriously unwell and away from office… there are signs that the main challenge to Parrikar comes from within the ruling combine… 1382 words.  click here

Goa’s betrayal of Charles Correa

10 Sep: Times of India. By Vivek Menezes. … politicians and bureaucrats in Goa fell over themselves to pay fulsome lip service to Charles Correa before and after he passed away in 2015, even while conspicuously and consistently rejecting his ideas and recommendations. That perfidy continues unchecked in the motley bad ideas and scams being imposed on Panaji under the “Smart City” rubric... As far back as 1972, this son of Moira saw what was at stake in Goa when he said, “To market Goa rationally, we must ensure that the development we bring about enhances its uniqueness … double or triple the density, and the ambiance will change irrevocably.” … Correa watched his dream for Goa disappear …  click here

The rising star who ended her life much before Dutee Chand challenged the rules

10 Sep: The Indian Express. Much before the Odisha sprinter — now an Asian Games double medallist — successfully challenged the rules regarding the eligibility of female athletes, an 18-year-old rising star, who faced similar discrimination, ended her life. The Indian Express travels to her quaint South Goan village, meets her still-grieving family and pieces together the mystery and pathos behind the suicide. It was October, 2001. When they fished out Pratima Gaonkar’s body from the village well, they found bags of stones tied to her ankles… It was three months after she had won a silver medal in 4×400 relay in the Junior Asian Athletics Championship in Brunei… details of the post-mortem report published in newspapers revealed her intersex traits. Insensitive reporting in local media — description of her private parts made it to the front pages of newspapers — would make Pratima’s deep dark secret public, something that the deceased had dreaded. For years, she had internalised the dilemma of her sexuality. After her death, it was all out there… 2704 words.  click here
