Foreigners seeking visa must reveal criminal records now

22 Oct: Tribune. Foreigners applying for Indian visa will now have to declare their criminal records as part of the new visa format to check child sexual abuse and a range of other crimes by travellers. The move follows a specific request Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi made to Sushma Swaraj, her counterpart in the MEA, last June to ensure mechanisms to prevent travelling child sex offenders from entering India… For instance, Raymond Varley, convicted in Britain for child sexual abuse in the 1970s hopped from country to country after his release ultimately making India his home. Here he ran a child sex abuse racket dating back to 1989 at a Goa orphanage…  click here

From Bengal to Bangla in the Rename Game

22 Oct: Times of India. By Vivek Menezes. “What’s in a name” asked Shakespeare … We find names matter very much indeed. The latest hullaballoo about nomenclature was stirred by Mamata Banerjee’s (photo) move to rename the giant Indian state of West Bengal to ‘Bangla’ … The main problem with the rename game in India is its misguided emphasis on “authenticity” which tends to be connected to regressive and often majoritarian impulses. This has played out with real costs in examples like Bombay-turned-Mumbai … Goa certainly has its issues in this regard. For one thing, if there is one city name desperately crying out for relief it is the linguistic obscenity of ‘Panaji’ which makes no sense in any language, least of all native Konkani. Ponnje would work, and also the more anglicized Panjim, but the status quo is purely ridiculous. Perhaps more achievable is the terrible habit of Goa’s political class of appeasing their parties in the centre, rather than naming after its own great achievers…  click here

Editorial: Recover the mining losses, it’s what needs to be done

23 Oct: Herald. The only entity that talks of recovery of the mining losses is the Goa Foundation. The silence by all others leads one to wonder whether a financial loss to the State exchequer that has been estimated at thousands of crores of rupees is not of any concern to anybody else. Goa Foundation is now contemplating moving the courts to direct the government to recover the Rs 3400 cr from illegal mining operations that has been pointed out by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and also the State Chartered Accountants audit report. When a government acts only after the intervention of the courts it reflects poorly upon the political will to act against the mining companies that have indulged in illegal mining…  click here

Time for Indian Christians not to turn the other cheek

22 Oct: Union of Catholic Asian News. A few years ago, church dealings with law-enforcement agencies were minimal. However, this is not the case now as violence and harassment against Christians have increased in recent times. Anti-Christian violence has risen sharply since 2014, when the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took power and groups supporting the party began promoting "Hindu-ness" (Hindutva) aimed at turning India into a Hindu state. Until about four years ago, Catholic Church leaders generally dismissed allegations that Christians were using fraudulent methods to convert people as "isolated incidents" made by fanatics… In light of the legal assault the church finds itself under, its leaders need to become more skilful regarding the law if it wants to overcome existing legal battles and prevent future harassment through court cases.  click here
