Goa Health Department Stops Giving Clearances To New Hotels, Spas

2 Feb: NDTV. The Goa health department has stopped giving clearances to new spas and restaurants in the state till a new health act is passed. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said Friday that the existing act would be amended to remove certain discrepancies and provide more powers to officers for taking action against irregularities. For now, the health department has stopped giving permissions under the Act to new restaurants and spas, he said. "Under the new act we want to set up a special cell which will have the power to give licenses to spas and restaurants," he said… The health department will also stop giving permission to restaurants to run from residential complexes, the minister said…  click here

‘Real estate initiatives will help boost sales in state’

2 Feb: Times of India. Union finance minister Piyush Goyal, in the interim Budget for 2019-20, gave real estate stakeholders reason to cheer as he unveiled a slew of measures that could provide Goa’s realty sector with some much-needed manoeuvring room. Goyal waived off notional rent, applicable on the second residential unit if someone has more than one house. Goyal made the concession for two homes in consideration for the needs of citizens who migrate for job opportunities… The minister also provided respite from capital gains tax for individuals who plan to sell their property…  click here

Conservation scheme mooted for heritage houses

2 Jan: Times of India. Struggling to maintain your centuries-old ancestral house? The town and country planning board has offered to help such individuals conserve their homes while also generating income for themselves. The board on Friday decided to formulate a scheme to incentivise heritage homestays and hotels in Goa to save and conserve heritage houses. Stating that there was a need to promote heritage tourism and that this could not be achieved without incentive, TCP minister Vijai Sardesai told reporters, “We are trying to create a scheme wherein old houses can be turned into heritage homestays by giving them sops, like tax exemption. We are trying to create the scheme along with tourism schemes and I will speak to the tourism minister because there is no other way to preserve heritage.” …  click here

The interesting story behind Goa's Feni

1 Feb: Times of India. Feni is a traditional liquor distilled from the fermented juice of cashew apples. It is safe to drink as it is free from organic or artificial flavors. The name "feni" is derived from the Sanskrit word phena which actually means froth. It is due to the fact that bubbles form a light froth when the liquor is shaken in a bottle or poured in a glass. Feni is a part of Goa food tradition from the last 400 years. Unlike other liquors, it doesn’t give you a hangover. It also got the Geographical Indication (GI) certificate in 2009. In 2016, the Goan government initiated the process of declaring it as a heritage drink…  click here

Surge in exports of Goa’s depleting fish catch

2 Feb: Navhind Times. After mining and tourism sectors, yet another sector of the Goan economy may head towards turmoil. The fishing sector has witnessed a huge surge in fish exports over the last three years even as the state has been witnessing a substantial decline in fish catch over the years … 50,571 tonne of fish worth Rs 711.91 crore was exported from Goa in 2017-18. In 2016-17, a total of 43,199 tonne of fish worth Rs 641.41 crore was exported, while fish consignments weighing 31,681 tonne worth Rs 490. 48 crore were exported in 2015-16… The figures have said that for the first 10 months of 2018 the prawns (sungtam) catch stood at 6,093 tonne as compared to 9,652 tonne in 2017…  click here

Minister apologises for comparing Goa CM to Jesus

2 Feb: The Hindu. Vijai Sardesai, Goa Agriculture Minister and president of the Goa Forward Party, apologised on Saturday for comparing the Chief Minister to Jesus Christ in the Assembly on Thursday. Mr. Sardesai had said, “In the Bible, there is a saying that a man should build bridges and not walls. Jesus built bridges not walls. You need to build bridges. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is a person who builds bridges.” On Friday, the Congress had demanded an apology from Mr. Sardesai accusing him of hurting the sentiments of Catholics in Goa...  click here
