Panjim girl gets elected to Swindon Borough Council
10 May: Herald. As Goa’s Capital gears up to elect a new MLA later this month, a young lady, Adorabelle Shaikh from Panjim has been elected to Swindon Borough Council from the Central ward, in the United Kingdom. Adorabelle’s victory earlier this month, makes her and husband Imtiyaz Shaikh the first Goan couple to be elected to Borough Councils. Imtiyaz, who hails from Vasco, was elected to the same council from the Eastcott ward in May 2018. In the elections held on May 2, Adorabelle received two-thirds of the total votes polled. She got 2,454 votes while her three opponents together received 1,162 votes. The husband–wife duo represents the Labour party in the Council. Hailing from Panjim, Adorabelle who earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce specialising in Business Management from the SS Dempo College of Commerce and Economics at Altinho has been living in the UK for nearly 15 years. Chris Perry’s son takes to the streets to reclaim house
10 May: Herald. Glenn Perry, the son of the legendary musician Chris Perry, has complained that his house has been usurped by some persons in his absence. He has filed a complaint at the Fatorda Police station and has requested help from authorities to get his house back. Shocked at finding himself homeless, Glenn said that someone else had broken into his flat in Fatorda and that they have been staying there unauthorised. Glenn has filed a police complaint against Constancio Fernandes and the flat occupants for criminally trespassing into his flat. Incidentally, Glenn had come down to Goa for the ceremony where a road in Fatorda was named after his father, Chris Perry … He called on all Goans to learn from this episode, which he said is an eye-opener; especially for those living abroad, who should check to see if there has been any criminal trespass on their properties… click here

Fascinating snapshot of the modern Britain that Baby Sussex has been born into
8 May: Daily Mail (UK). Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed Archie Mountbatten-Windsor Monday. Archie and Meghan Markle are the first mixed race members of the royal family. Femail speaks to four women about their experience being mixed race in the UK … Anya Harris, 55, works in finance for the NHS. A mother of two, she's divorced and lives in East Sussex … “I was the only person with brown skin at my school in Bournemouth, and I was subjected to constant racism. I’m half-Indian — my mum is white and my dad Indian, though they split up when I was a baby — but I was constantly called wog, the n-word and told how filthy I was… I went to work in the City as a broker, but I’d lie about my heritage and say I was half-Italian. It was only in my 30s when I visited Goa and was assumed by everyone there to be Indian that I started to see the beauty of Indian women. From that day on I felt less ashamed of myself, and now I’m in my 50s, I do think my darker skin is an asset… click here

Philippines: Goan-inspired ‘binagoongang baboy’ and other ‘Indianized’ fare
9 May: Philippine Daily Inquirer. Three culinary students from the University of West London recently took a seven-day trip to the Philippines, part of their prize for winning a cooking competition this year called Zest Quest Asia… Their mission was to research on Filipino cuisine … The mostly Filipino diners waited for the Goan-inspired binagoongang baboy. The menu described the process. First, the pork was marinated in a mixture of Goa red masala, vinegar and dried shrimp. Then the pieces were slow-roasted and finished with coconut milk. The process reminded me that Goa has its own version of adobo— the vindaloo… Dessert consisted of Filipino bibingka and the Goan bebinca… The conversation led to the Indian influence on Filipino cooking, most notable of which is the pickled vegetable which we call achara and Indians call achar … 683 words. click here

Off To Goa, Again? This Homestay Is As Pocket-Friendly As It’s Peaceful
8 May: National Geographic. Balcony seats make for a good watch, and the one I have taken in the balcony of Miss Jenny’s Homestay definitely doesn’t disappoint. It’s where I sit for hours, tracking the noon rays parade onto the coconut tree-speckled backyard—an exercise my itinerary-free weekend in a refurbished century-old Portuguese villa wholeheartedly supports. Top that with a location such as Saligao, a sleepy, low-key hamlet in North Goa, and idling seems just the ideal thing to do. “The original owners had intended this corner to be a pigsty,” … click here
