Venita Coelho: ‘All of Me’ for children’s literature

25 May: Herald. Noted author Venita Coelho is set to release her new book ‘All of Me’ for young adults. The book features the famed jewel, the Kohinoor. Based in Moira, Venita Coelho’s work revolves around a hectic schedule that contradicts her peaceful surroundings. Her latest book to hit bookstores is ‘All of Me’, published by Tina Narang at Harper Collins. Based in London in 1854, Castor is imprisoned and his multiple personalities are trying to solve the mystery of why Castor was imprisoned. The clues lead them to the Koh-i-noor. What inspired Venita to take the young readers on this journey? “Inspiration never lasts. Anger does. When David Cameron, the Prime Minister of England, was visiting India some years ago, he was asked if his country would return the Koh-i-noor. His reply was, ‘I don’t believe in returnism.’ The colonial arrogance of that made me so mad it powered an entire book! …  click here

How a single taluka halted BJP’s march in S Goa

25 May: Times of India. The Salcete jinx came to haunt the BJP this time as well. With a cumulative lead of nearly 50,000 votes in the eight Catholic-dominated constituencies of Salcete, Congress romped home with relative ease in the 2019 polls. Significantly, Congress secured leads in all eight of these assembly segments, belying hopes of the BJP that at least Fatorda and Margao would provide a tinge of saffron to the Congress citadel. While in 2014, the highest lead secured by Congress in Salcete was 8,105 in Velim, this time Sardinha’s leads crossed the threshold of 10,000 in three assembly segments – 12,115 in Nuvem, followed by 10,706 in Benaulim and 10,260 in Velim. He also got sizeable leads in Curtorim (8,346) and Navelim (4,599)…  click here

Hindu Nationalist Party’s Victory Renews Religious Minorities’ Fears in India

24 May: National Catholic Register (USA). Caution has become the watchword among Christians and secular groups in India in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party’s victory in the country’s 17th national election. When the votes for the protracted election were counted May 23, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) improved its majority — winning 303 seats along with BJP allies securing another 46 seats in the 542-member Indian Parliament, the “Lok Sabha” (People’s House). Although the Hindu nationalist party’s resounding victory raised apprehensions among minority Christians and secular-minded citizens, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the archbishop of Mumbai, the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India and key adviser to Pope Francis, remained optimistic. “We pray that everything goes well. We are encouraged by what the prime minister has assured,” Cardinal Gracias told the Register May 24. Part of that assurance comes from Modi’s emphasis during his victory speech on maintaining the rule of law in India, as the first principle of governance…  click here
